Governor: Tax Hike Possible if Prop. 76 Fails (Schwarzenegger)
Los Angeles Times ^ | September 2, 2005 | Peter Nicholas

SACRAMENTO -- Facing widespread opposition to his special election, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Friday that if voters reject a proposed spending restraint on the November ballot, he might be forced to raise taxes.

Schwarzenegger previewed a campaign theme in a morning radio interview, predicting that new taxes might be the only alternative if voters reject Proposition 76, the "Live Within Our Means" act.

Asked on Sacramento station KTKZ-1380 AM what he might do to avert future budget deficits if the spending control is defeated, Schwarzenegger said:

"Then we have to look at raising taxes, because this is the only option we have, in order to create the money. And this is why I tell people vote yes on Proposition 76 and make sure that we do everything that we can to pass this proposition so that we force our legislators once and for all to live within their means and not to continue spending money and to keep making promises to people that they can't keep."

Schwarzenegger's comments came amid a new statewide poll showing little appetite for the Nov. 8 special election that he depicts as central to his "year of reform" agenda.

"An action-packed disappointment, if there ever was one...."

I don't know a single conservative around here (Orange County) that would vote for him again. He's toast.

Remember, Tom was the only one to vote against the deficit budget this year. That deficit is actually going to end up as a surplus, mostly from higher taxes that are coming in from gas prices.

Be that as it may, 2/3rds of the legislature has to approve the budget at this point. 2/3rds of the legislature has to approve higher taxes. 2/3rds of the legislature can override a veto of the budget.

Mid year corrections would not be subject to legislature review. Actual corrections can be made to bring the budget back into line.

That's why Tom supports it, even with the poison 10 billion credit card. Without it, there will be no control over the money in California.

Remember - over sixty percent voted to ban gay marriage in this state. Two thirds of the state senate voted for changing the law to bring in gay marriage. There is no fear in Sacramento. Arnold blew it by not using his celebrity at the start, by his trying to 'play fair' and 'work with others.' These folks don't work with others.

I don't have to live in California...I love the area. Nevada is looking better and better and as a small business owner about 7 other jobs go with me.

Reminds of some ads the State of Nevada was running on KFI AM---the SoCal talk radio station---around 10 years ago. Clever---a narrative voice-over was enumerating all the anti-business aspects of being in California---high taxes, uncontrolled workers comp costs, etc.---and after every item, you'd hear the "whoosh!" and "crack!" of a whip, and then a plaintive voice saying, "Thank you, sir! May I have another?" Of course, the upshot of the commercial was that the erstwhile masochistic businessperson got fed up and decided to move to Nevada. Very clever---why didn't I act on its invitation at the time?

"I wouldn't know. I'm American"

Then your home page sports deception.

BTW, you don't have issues with idiots, you have oneness with them.

If Bustamante gets the Governorship, you can write off California as one of the United States---it will not simply never be Republican again, it will never be American again. The exodus of American citizens and particularly Republicans that has been ongoing in the last decade will only accelerate. And all the pendejos with their chistes about "nuking California along the San Andreas Fault and letting it fall in the ocean" can go celebrate by puking outside a 24 hour pub. So much for the state that gave America Ronald Reagan.

I LOVE the Sierras...but I can always move to the "other side". For me the Carson area looks pretty nice. I wanna stay here, I have a 110 year old Victorian that was moved to this location and completely restored. I want to stay...but I'm not going to be used.

I am so weary of politicians threatening if you do not vote for this we will have to raise taxes.
Damn them! they have not lived within their means for decades, why in the hell does he think we have this mess? Why do we need a proposition to say live within your means?
I wish they were parttime. Now we have the feds. back in town. EGAD!

I've known plenty of people who moved to NV from CA, and never looked back. I've thought more and more myself about leaving---this just isn't the state it was 25 years ago, or even 10 years ago...

Any lack of support he's suffering from ANY FReeper has been earned by him fair and square!!! And you know it!!! The only thing we do is hold him to what he bloviates about, like "cut, cut, cut!" Have you no senses with which to see, hear and smell this crappola.

Oh! And Tom McClintock is wrong to support this dog, too! It's just that A.S. has cornered all conservatives and Republicans by sucking all the oxygen and commonsense out of the total Recall, AFTERALL!!! (including the CAGOP!)

That deficit is actually going to end up as a surplus, mostly from higher taxes that are coming in from gas prices.

Article 19 of the California Constitution creates the state highway account, into which all tax revenues on motor vehicle fuels are deposited. Article 19 restricts the use of these gas tax revenues primarily to streets and highways. It also permits gas tax to be used for fixed guideways for public transit (but not vehicles or operating costs), state law enforcement (i.e. Highway Patrol), and environmental mitigation from use of motor vehicles, specifically air and sound emissions.

Gas taxes are not General Fund revenues and have no effect on surpluses or deficits unless the legislature and the executive agree to divert the funds and that is subject to court challenge.

Oh... It's NOT going to be Bustamante! It'll be Phil Angelides with McClintock as Lt. Gov. (write this down and look it up on election day)

Both of which are void of chrisma and flaming governmental policy wonks!!!

Angelides I don't like, but Tom? OK, he's as dry as the gin in Grandpa's liquor cabinet, but I like him. I wish now that---as so many people have badgered me here on before and since---I had voted for him rather that 'Roid Republican. Sure it can't be McClintock governor and Angelides Lt. Gov.?

It'll take an sct of God himself to get Tom as the Gub candidate next year.

Being as there is no primary next year after the CA GOP decided to lockeveryone else out, so mesmerized were they with the aura of aRnie .

And I ask you, what is wrong with 'bland' anyway if it doesn't spend money like its going out of style. Gray was no charmer or much of a personality or people guy.

At least Tom wouldn't being bouncing workers off of file cabinets or groping them ..
;-)
