Native Countries and Regions of Illegal Immigrants

81 percent come from Mexico and other parts of Latin America as of March 2004:

• Mexico — 57 percent, or 5.9 million
• Other Latin American nations — 24 percent, or 2.5 million
• Asia — 9 percent, or 1 million
• Europe and Canada — 6 percent, or 600,000
• Africa and other — 4 percent, or 400,000

According to the Pew report, “Mexicans overall represent about 32 percent of the foreign-born population, a high figure by historical standards but not unprecedented; both Irish and German immigrants accounted for a higher percentage of the foreign-born at various points in the mid- and late-19th century.”

The number of Mexican immigrants has increased an average of 8 percent each year over three decades. Their number increased from 760,000 in 1970 to more than 11 million in 2004. The Pew report says about 80 percent to 85 percent of that increase is because of illegal immigration.

Where Illegal Immigrants Live

68 percent live in just eight states:

• California — 24 percent, or 2.4 million
• Texas — 14 percent, or 1.4 million
• Florida — 9 percent, or 850,000
• New York — 7 percent, or 650,000
• Arizona — 5 percent, or 500,000
• Illinois — 4 percent, or 400,000
• New Jersey — 4 percent, or 350,000
• North Carolina — 3 percent, or 300,000
• All other states — 32 percent, or 3.2 million

I was wondering how long it would take for the immigration crowd to link illegal aliens to Katrina.

I guess it took until today. Among the other things I do, I'm a commercial real estate broker. Housing will be needed for a huge influx of Katrina victims. A great deal of housing would be available for these people if the housing was not occupied by people who shouldn't be in the country. Cut me some slack. I don't write about the illegal immigration problem often enough.
