Dying Pets Break the Hearts of Helpless Rescuers...Please Help the Truly Helpless

September 2, 2005 -- Thousands of abandoned pets are on the brink of drowning or dying of thirst as a result of Hurricane Katrina, and many more are feared dead, animal-rescue groups said yesterday. Despite very limited access to evacuated areas, rescue efforts have begun, with teams from FEMA, Noah's Wish and the Humane Society racing against time.

Many people who ended up in shelters were forced to leave their pets behind because the Red Cross and the Louisiana Superdome don't allow animals.

"I'm guessing we're going to have tens of thousands of animals affected," said Dick Green, manager of animal emergency services for the American Humane Association. "There are literally thousands of animals in New Orleans alone stuck in homes . . . going without water. They don't have food. Every day that goes on, the situation worsens."

You're cruel. Pets make life worth living for alot of people.

I'm not cruel. I have a dog and a cat that I love. I have a neighbor that I'm not too fond of. But if it came down to giving water to my dog or to my neighbor then I would pick the neighbor every time.

Take your time. I can wait until all the animals AND people are saved. I'll make due in the meantime.

For the thousandth time --- I am not criticizing donations.

No--you're just criticizing the efforts that people are donating to. Same diff.

You would prefer that our country not be so wealthy and successfull?

Never. I advocate common sense. Something that tends to get clouded with success, but is not mutually exclusive.

Hey, I'm not trying to pontificate. I'm just sharing having to make hard descions and having to live with them. I've come to know what my priorities are. Electricity goes out, which baby do you save? Have that on your conscience. Fido isn't on mine.

You have made up entire 'choice' scenarios in your head... and it's all fiction. Agencies with the talents to handle animals are asking for donations to ramp up and head down there, human rescue people are already there and more are coming. This isn't about choices, it's about calling ALL hands to help.

If I were in New Orleans before that storm I would have gotten myself and my pets out of there - pronto!

But it will be a LONG time before all people are safetly evacuated from that mess and I doubt if the true number of dead Americans there will ever be known.

This is a time for prayer as well as assistance.

God bless you for helping out. I have been donating on line to people and animal organizations.
I have been sickened and in tears by some of the responses here.

there are too many callous people in FR

True because they have never faced anything like this before....I for one will continue to do whatever I can to try and reunite this poor child with his beloved dog....I have e-mailed FoxNews and Animal Planet hoping they may pick it up as a human interest story....perhaps Snowball didn't even make after bringing seperated from his little buddy, I am hoping someone can answer the question of just exactly does happen to these pets that were left behind

Agree, 100%.

ANY effort put into "saving" these animals is just dumb.

The extent of the human suffering is tremendous, even when these folks get out of NOLA, they have to survive in a shelter for God knows how long.

Save the animals???? Send your money to reduce human suffering, the animal suffering can end as soon as the first armed human spots them. Not cruel, just real.

Nope, just the planned use of that money.

I think that when there is an emergency and people's lives are in danger, that the rescue of animals is a criminal act.

I love animals as much as the next person, but pets at this point are not the top priority. If they can be rescued without sacrificing time or resources that could be spent on rescuing/helping human beings, fine. Otherwise, sorry, Fido.

Fine, then stop parsing your words like a politician! You think that those of us who are giving to Noah's Ark and similar group sare contributing our money to a criminal act.

That makes you, frankly, a bit of a loon.

No, I don't disagree with that. If you come up on one, fine. But don't squander resources focusing only on animals. Humans are priority.

Thank you for posting, Iluvlabs.

This is not an "either/or" situation for me. It is possible to help both people and animals.

One correction -- the number given for Noah's Wish is the fax number. The telephone number is (530) 622-9313.

They are not answering their phones, either. There is a message saying that the best way to donate is via their website:

Given the way some of those "humans" are behaving-I'm just not so sure of that.
