IS there a plan? It's an EXTREMELY important question to ask, in my humble opinion.

Actually, I stated that further upthread.

Whatever the plans were, they were inadequate (e.g. relying on cell phones for communication in a crisis).

This is a great opportunity to rethink what went wrong, now that it's been tested, and fix the weaknesses in the plan.

And you can take it to the bank that our Harvard MBA President will make sure it gets done.

But as I also said, the scope of this disaster is so great that we can't be too critical of those who are doing everything in their power to help those in need.

"I think among a lot of people who didn't vote for him, and seeping into the people who did vote for him"

That explains it perfectly. As for Toledo, he never stopped visiting families that lost loved ones in Iraq and Afghanistan. He did stop in Toledo.

They have been unable to get food and medical supplies into town. Whatever 'plan' was in place just wasn't good enough. Homeland Security - one of the stars of the admin - didn't prepare for this at all.

That's crystal clear to anyone who has seen this unfold.

The media has learned well. It took them a few months to a year to turn 9/11 into a political circus. They accomplished it here before the bodies are even cold.

There's a lot of defensiveness here where there should be some reflection on how we're going to prove to our enemies that we can take it on the chin and protect our republic in a time of crisis.

It's not defensiveness, IMO.

It's a final realization of the fact that you simply cannot help people who would prefer to have the issue than the help, who would rather score political points than find solutions, and who don't really give a crap about what this looks like to the rest of the world (in fact, they probably LIKE it.).

I am glad the media is focussing on NO......they think they're scoring points against the President.

Once again in their hatred they could not be more incorrect.

I'm not bashing Bush, either. But you are 100% right. Even with some advance warning, the rescue efforts appear inept and uninspiring. Local and state authorities have been thoroughly unimpressive since the weekend. The President appears to have been out to lunch. 4 years of Homeland Security don't look well invested.

Well, what do you think you're going to get for only $3.5 Trillion per year, millions of parasites on the payroll and millions of pages of promulgations on the books?

The problem is obviously lack of funding, not failure of Big Stupid Government.

To say nothing of the FACT that the Louisiana National Guard is controlled by the GOVERNOR OF LOUISIANA.

So true and ironic. It's never ending either. I can't believe the first line of attack was Bush not signing the Kyoto treaty. Thank goodness he didn't. You know, if it wasn't this it would be something else.

I pray for all in the path of this hurricane. I do blame the hurricane, and the local/state government for not ever considering this scenerio planning, preparing, or any forethought to this happening. They knew this was where they lived and this could happen. This tells me if a Terriorist attack occurred in New Orleans, they had no plan for that either. After 9/11 you would think they had some kind of emergency planning.

I also blame the Thugs who raped, killed and stole from the dead. Shot at volunteers, rescuers and people trying to deliver needed items. I wonder, will Bush be blamed for them next?

The President enjoys his lowest approval ratings ever. That's not a myth: it's accurate. Recent events won't help him. The majority of Americans aren't seeing through this.

As for being or not being one of us, my conservative credentials on FR are well known. And I have been a contributing member of the community for longer than you have.

Bush officially opened the can of whoopass this morning. Order will be restored now in a matter of days. The initial response was hampered by the feckless leadership of the mayor and governor, and of the thugs preventing what assistance there was.

Nothing more need be said.

I am with you, I simply don't understand why the police rely on cell phones for emergency communications -- but they do. The cell towers re the first to go down, if not the circuits jam solid and become unusable.

We need a new Cabinet-level Department of Homeland Security Department Oversight, obviously. Bush hasn't created new Cabinet-level departments in a year or two, so there's probably unspent money lying around that'd be just dandy for this purpose.

It is an enormous problem we are trying to overcome. The biggest in our nation's history since the Civil War.

But since the president is clearly not happy with the relief effort, I think it's safe for freepers to agree with him. There are lots of us, me included, who had such faith in our military and government (like FEMA) that I thought they could overcome everything, including water and looters.

This has shown me more clearly than anything that we have to rely on ourselves and not ever rely on the goverment to do anything. Ever.

Exactly.

This storm was STILL in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama at 1 a.m. on WEDNESDAY morning. Wednesday, people. You simply cannot move in to help people WHILE a storm is ongoing.

And I am sure whatever "plan" the government had never once allowed time to FIGHT OUT WAY IN.

It's been THREE DAYS. 3. Three.

You are a flipping IDIOT! I'll repeat that - YOU ARE AN IDIOT! I HAVE 7,064 POSTS ON FR SINCE 2003. Just because I have an opinion that rubs you the wrong way doesn't make me a troll! Are you some mindless robot? Because that's what makes us different from DU. We actually employ critical thinking here, but you want a cheering section at all costs, instead.

WTF. Now I'm mad.

Rescuers and LEO are calling the soldiers and MP's "the calvary" and showing a depressing amount of relief. Shows just how bad and dangerous the anarchy is.
