The US will recover -- The private citizens who were best prepared for Katrina were those who did much that responsible civic authorities would want them not to do. You were most likely to do well in this hurricane if you owned a big four-wheel-drive with a full tank of petrol and a spare tank hoarded in the garage. If you decided to stay in New Orleans, you did best if you lived in a very solid, energy inefficient, two-storey house on high ground, with some hoarded food and bottled water, and if you owned a shotgun or two. The inner city renter who habitually took public transport and followed advice to move to the Superdome hit a horrible mess.

Leaked Katrina memo increases pressure on FEMA chief -- Nagin knew the Levee was only designed for a Cat3 storm the City should have been fully evacuated BEFORE the hurricane hit. Nagin failed simple as that. But even if it were not fully evacuated, if the buses had been used to start an evacuation and parked in other cities as the minutes from the June 5, 2005 NO school board meeting recommended, there would have been 400-500 NO school buses in working order that could have been used to continue the evacuation.

Katrina: ABC Notices The New Orleans Emergency Plan

At least one major media outlet has finally noticed that New Orleans had an emergency response plan for hurricances and evacuations that somehow never got implemented. ABC News yesterday asked why Mayor Ray Nagin not only did not follow the plan, but actively sent non-evacuees to a site that had no preparations to handle them:   Perhaps the media might notice this November 2004 analysis of the dry run Hurricane Ivan provided city officials in evacuating the city as a hurricane approached. It would address the meme that only the very poor and infirm resisted the mandatory evacuation, and noted that New Orleans did a poor job in communicating the evacuation order then as well --   Comments (82)

Gil Gross interviewed Sen. Landrieu...she is STILL blaming Bush, but get this...
She said she is going to introduce legislation that takes ALL $$$$$$$$$$$ out of the hands of FEMA and HS for her state and ALA and MISS...and put all of the Billions of dollars that will go to that region...

Did Blanco attempt genocide at Superdome? -- On Sunday, when they started herding the unwashed masses into the Super Doom, (not a typo), I went to my 90 year old grandmother's house and turned on the TV. I told her we were about to witness the biggest disaster the U.S. has ever seen. I mentioned to her that I knew she lived through the 'Great Depression' but this would be worse and happen faster.

Snipers Firing On Workers Repairing Cell Phone Towers -- The stepped-up evacuation came as workers trying to get into the city to restart essential services came under sniper fire. More than 100 officers and seven armored personnel carriers captured a suspect in a housing project who had been firing on workers trying to restore cell phone towers, authorities said.

Air America: "They were not shooting at helicopters, but just trying to get attention to be rescued" -- Don't forget too that she was inciting the looters to loot last week. She urged them to go loot the good stuff, not loot just at Wal-Mart.

Hurricane Hillary's In a Whirl -- Psst. Hillary. Did you know that your husband's FEMA Director was criticized by Jesse Jackson during Hurricane Floyd because ONE MONTH after the hurricane there were still people who had not been helped?

Oh, and Hillary. Did you know that the Bush administration spent slightly more than your husband on levee/flood control for New Orleans?

From the past: Update: Hurricane Katrina is NOW CATEGORY FIVE! -- The incompetence of this mayor and governor is going to cause many people to be injured and lose their lives. The Director of FEMA said they have studied this scenario for two years and their models called for evacuation 48-72 hours prior to landfall. But he said the decision had to be made by the governor (state) and mayor (city). The evacuation has already been delayed too long. --As an astute FReeper noted last night--on election day, they put all the voters on buses and promise them the moon and stars. now when their lives are in immediate danger, the poor people must fend for themselves.  08/28/2005

When Fox News's Major Garrett broke a story on Wednesday afternoon that Red Cross senior officials were confirming that Louisiana state officials had blocked the supply of water, food, blankets, and hygiene products to the Superdome, it was only moments later that the story had been picked up on FreeRepublic, and Garrett was booked and interviewed on my radio show.
