yes they do suck...there was a small plane down in my town, took FEMA five days to find the deceased pilot, rather than let the local volunteers go where they knew he was, if only the family knew the truth they wouldn't be happy.

Nah, there is a hint of truth in your initial comment, though some refuse to acknowledge it.

Based on the "goings on" in the Superdome reported by the media, there is a very bad element among those evacuees and nobody wants that coming to their area. That's why I made the comment about Governor Perry proudly offering up the Astrodome, but made no mention of any shelters in his hometown of Austin.

I live in Houston and will be purchasing my very first handgun this weekend.

Rebuliding is not rationally feasible. The broken levees will take months/years to repair. Half of NO is a lake now. It will remain that way till the Mississippi river changes course.

Half of NO is still viable, just needs a bit of infrastructure repair. Most of the underwater part was zero income housing / LBJ ghettos.

I went to San Antonio in May for my son, Joel's, graduation from Basic Training (Air Force) and found the people in Texas to be extremely gracious and friendly. Plus, I loved seeing the flag waving all over the place. I thought, "Hey, this is the home of my President!"

Even the highway patrolman who stopped me for speeding was great. When he found out we were from California, he laughed and told us a few jokes (about CA) and then led us to our hotel (it was Midnight and we were lost). Said he would give us a warning as a souvenir.

The Houston Astrodome has twenty thousand people on it's field, nooks and crannies. The others from NO will be spread out by the Red Cross, Homeland and state governments, not to mention private home. Thanks has to go out to the good people of Houston, TX.

Memphis Expecting More Hurricane Refugees

Thousands of hurricane refugees are in Memphis right now. Mayor Willie Herenton says the city is expecting even more. “There are a whole lot of logistical and just human need things that we’ve got to address”, says Mayor Herenton. The newly assembled Mayor’s Task Force is facing perhaps the largest challenge this region has ever seen. It must accommodate hurricane victims’ most basic needs: food, clothing, shelter, medical, and the list goes on.



Refugees from ravaged Mississippi were scheduled to arrive at the Mid-South coliseum, but ran out of gas and were diverted Thursday evening. However, there are still thousands along the Gulf Coast that are in need. This means Memphis must be ready.



Governor Bredesen has requested a federal emergency declaration for Tennessee in order to assist thousands of hurricane refugees. A federal declaration would allow the state to seek funding for processing and housing evacuees, providing medical care and other help.

Local news joyfully reported tonight that "perhaps as many as 100,000 Katrina refugees will be locating to our area in the coming months, changing the face of said area for years to come." Just like they were announcing the opening of a new amusement park or something. Uhhh, anyone following the the Katrina threads for a few days prolly shouldn't be REALLY excited about tens of thousands of these folks showing up on your doorstep.

That's pretty funny.

But Texas sure seems to be coming through with a lot of help. I spoke to a woman today who said her husband, a tour bus driver in eastern Texas, in now in New Orleans ferrying victims between LA to Houston. She's obviously worried for his safety.

IMO that bus driver is doing more to help than most of us. God help them all.
