Mayor Kilpatrick Announces Plan to Aid Evacuees By Glenn Zimmerman Web produced by Sarah Morgan September 1, 2005
Thursday, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick announced his plan to help the victims of hurricane Katrina. He is hoping to not only help evacuees, but to also gain new Detroiters and strengthen the city.
The mayor and people in the city have contacted members of the hotel industry. They want to make 2,000 to 3,000 hotel rooms available for evacuees until December 1st, 2005.
Buses have already been secured to relocate people to Michigan. Mayor Kilpatrick is working with airlines to see if victims can also be flown up north.
The mayor said food vouchers will be available and Steves Soul Food has already committed to feeding up to 1,000 people.
The Detroit school system said they can absorb many of the children and Detroit area ministers said they will offer counseling.
Ford Field will be donating the stadium for a national benefit that will be announced in the future and there will be Red Cross barrels around the city of Detroit to collect money.
As soon as they hear from FEMA, medical professionals from the area will head to New Orleans to assist with the overwhelming need for medical attention.
So far, Texas is the only state that has come forward to house hurricane victims, which will be sent to San Antonio and Houston.
Mayor Kilpatrick said he wanted to make sure the people of New Orleans know they have a home here in Detroit.
FEMA will need to give the OK before the plan goes into effect.
Wonderfull Idea......right up to the point of realization that they would be unable to find jobs.
With all respect, does Detroit really need more non-productive welfare recipients? Unfortunately, the majority of the refugees from N.O. are as described above. I hope they can turn their lives around but I can't see this option working out to anyone's advantage...SSZ
That's nice of Mayor Kilpatrick. Had he been as alert to his constituents' well-being during the past 3 years as he has been to the hurricane victims, he would have breezed to reelection; as it is, he will certainly lose in the run-off.
New Orleans doesn't exist anymore. 1.4 million people have to go somewhere. With them will come a gravy train of federal and charitable assistance dollars.
Detroit just wants a piece of that action.
Kwame's just doing the math.
More deabeats = more cash from Washington = bigger power base to exploit.
with all due respect- shut the F up. He can have the 10 plus thousand heading here to Dallas.
let him decide if he can handle them once they are there. they will fit right in on hell night.
Not a good idea to send 10's of thousands of democrats to a swing state.
This will get Detroit off the top spot on The Poorest Cities In America list-- 30,000 crawfish fishermen and shrimp shellers. And they can make Bullets and Rice with real bullets.
Detroit has more than it's fair share of invisible voters already.
Trying to hide the fact that he is a criminal?
jobs? people are digging up their DEAD and moving them out of detroit. why would ANYONE want to move there?
Detroit, in the next census, will have been shown to have shrunk well under the 1 million person mark - and when that occurs there are certain Federal funds that will not be available. But if they import 100K more people ...
You mean this story is REAL?! I thought for sure it was a parody. Sounds like a silly idea. Can these people be registered in time to vote for Kilpatrick? I suspect that is one big reason he wants them.
If I had to choose between staying in New Orleans or going to Detroit, I think I'd stay in New Orleans...
Detroit will absorb LA children into their school system?! Absorb?! Yikes! Kwame speaks the truth and he is doing the math. He has proven himself a VERY slick politician. DPS has lost at least half of their 200,000+ students steadily for the last decade. Detroit Federation of Teachers are worried about coasting to retirement. They need students and Katrina will prove to be a gravy train for many slick politicians along with the slick teacher unions holding them up.
didn't you know that detroit reports LAST when michigan tallies their presidential votes?
otherwise they wouldn't know how many votes they need.
and that's a fact.
Generosity is free as long as you don't have to come up with the money and Detroit is supported by out-state Michigan besides Kwami wants to be reelected.

Mr. MaggieCarta wondered aloud whether there is any room in the Manoogian Mansion (the Mayor's residence) for these people.
