People died because the state and city officials wouldn't face reality.

Actually it's broader than that. People died because the residents wouldn't face reality. Believe me one would have to be an idiot to live in N.O. and not be aware of the risk. It's the "City that care forgot", remember? Granted the local officials have made it worse but ultimately all of the people of N.O. share responsibility for a tragedy everyone knew would happen sooner or later.

Sh*t. And the whole time I thought it was an act of God. Like tornados in the midwest, or blizzards on the east coast, or earthquakes here in California (or anywhere). Boy you sure have enlightened me.

I wonder why it says "Act of God" on my insurance policy.. I better check that out. hmmm..

It's true that many people will never face reality. But listening to the announcements (granted, from a distance), I didn't feel there was much urgency or that the city really thought it was worth bothering with. In addition, I don't understand how a "mandatory" evacuation order could have left behind thousands of people in such a relatively small city.
