Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Did anyone just hear Olberman on MSNBC? "That Limbaugh.." and "he doesn't get it." He is going to get it tomorrow.

The Stand is a great novel. And I did get all the way through that book as well, as opposed to some of his later ones.

Again, reading those type of post-war/post disaster books would have been good brain food for many of today's planners, as I wrote earlier.

My cousin was hit by a tornado in N GA, but all is well : )

All is well - that is wonderful news! So very good to hear your cousin is safe after being clobbered by the long arms of nasty Katrina.

I will say ONCE AGAIN. Those people in MS crying over losing their possessions should thank GOD they are not in NO.

And not be crying? What is your point? How do you know that they are not thanking God that they are not in NO?

I am not trying to be argumentative but your statement, whether you intended it to be or not, is condescending, that is not my assumption, it is self-evident.

The tourists being abused inside the convention center are being HELD HOSTAGE. They cannot leave of their own free will (if they are still alive). Hopefully they will still be alive if the police go in.

Buried in the NY Times:

The police superintendent, Eddie Compass, estimated that perhaps 100 armed people were inside the convention center and that he was considering a plan to restore order there with a force of perhaps 500 police officers and national guardsmen.

Mr. Compass said that some stranded tourists who had sought shelter at the convention center instead found trouble. "The tourists are walking around there and as soon as these individuals see them, they're being preyed upon," he said.

Last I heard, all 7 people who stayed on Grand Isle are accounted for. Structures on the island were hit hard by the storm, as one would expect.

"What students is he going to rescue?"

Probably the sons and daughters of the people who have benefitted from the Rainbow Coalition. What about the poor African Americans who are supposed to be Jackson's constituency?

I hope he brings firepower with him landing on that levee.

He's quite the avid hunter, so I'm sure he'll go in armed. I'm most concerned about the time after he lands and before he gets back to the plane. The potential for trouble is obvious.

I think he needs someone to stay with the plane. If he hasn't already gone and this is a weekend rescue, I think I'll volunteer to go with him. I'll guard the plane while he gets his FIL. A few shotgun blasts should be all that's needed to discourage a hijacking from occurring.

You know Harrigan has been doing a wonderful job. He has been through so much emotionally gutwrenching garbage in Iraq that he is very professional in handling his assignment. Shep is too emotional and some of the others are also. Jeff Goldblum seems better at handling the horrors before him. I think Fox needs to rotate these people out before they have breakdowns on the air. I think little Molly Henenberg was doing a good job today, she is very gutsy, and savvy but never loses her feminity. No one person among us can handle this stuff the first time out, and a constant barrage of this tragic scene cannot be tolerated.

Don't be surprised when society falls apart and we respond like our nature would entail.
