28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

He should be PO'd
Coast Guard briefing the President now. Sounds like the ports and waterways east of Pasgalouga (sp?) should be back up and running soon.
I don't think he looks shaken or overwhelmed. I think he looks aggravated.
I'll bet you there were still a least a few ham radio operators down there working away through the aftermath. Hams ALWAYS find a way to keep going. We're generally some of the most emergency-prepared folks you'll ever find. (OK, I'm not, but most others are!)
There has been a tendency to dismiss amateur radio in these days of email and cellphones, but it still can be very useful in civil defense situations. The Red Cross and Salvation Army in particular lean heavily on volunteer hams, I bet there's dozens to hundreds down there now.

Flame away but I measure it by the FEMA guy, Brown, saying he was helping people who were on television begging for their lives. Others here may not, but I also measure the absence on television of some like Barbour and the Colonel as them being too busy working. I measure the FEMA creature as believing his job was simply PR and for spending two days on every news channel in rotating pressers while thousnds lay dying in the street for lack of water.
Geraldo meeting the convoy?
Is he running down the road yelling "Ashley, Ashley, you're home!!" GWTW for those who don't know!
To counteract all the MSM buzz of NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING.
This is showing everything that is getting done and how big it is!
"If the left attacks Bush in this they will destroy themselves."
They will attack, they are attacking, but all they seem to destroy is what we love..America. I hope your right..
You got me. However, there's been some good news out of this.
Pres Bush - "I am incredibly proud of our Coast Guard."
"At the President presser the Gov of Alabama is all proactive showing all that they have done. Mississippi Governor is all Proactive SHowing what they have done.
I got the feeling that the Governor of LA will not either be there or have anything to say on what she has done."
I was thinking the same thing. Also, thinking it is obvious that the Pubbies in these 2 states are competent and have been showing leadership. It's also obvious from their comments that FEMA and others have been there since day 1. Is it because they asked for them and NO didn't or??
The Cong Black Caucus and LSM isn't going to address the fact that the adults are in charge in these 2 states - they're probably going to continue their disgusting rant and say NO didn't get Fed help because of race.
Well, the shot I saw had him staring at the ground when Haley Barber was talking to him.
Because people have whined that he wasn't in front on cameras.
I think your right.. Bush is talking now about restoring order in NO.. I think that is ONE item that is ticking him off..
Man, the impression I'm getting is that Bush is really speaking like a leader.
I don't know...just seems a little weird.
LOL
Yeah. Isn't it amazing that the Governors of Mississippi and Alabama both just said FEMA has been "outstanding" and has responded to every request. FEMA works fine when there is leadership. Nothing works fine when you've got a government like Lousiana voted for itself.
