Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Jesse Jackson has arrived in Louisiana...

"Pitiful? No, an air-drop mission like that would be murderous, criminal."

Memory failing, but I seem to vaguely remember some kind of minor flap during the Afghanistan War, about "Bombing Civilians with MRE's"

Also (really digging, now -- this may be hallucination.) something about people getting clobbered by airdropped frozen chickens, maybe in Kosovo, or maybe in some other disaster area around that time.

Ya can't win, no matter what ya do..

(Please excuse the semi-senile rambling) ;)

I heard one of the doctors who had been in the SuperDome on some show tonight; he said that under NO circumstances would he EVER go back in there precisely because of that.

The medical teams were threatened from the second the went through the doors.

Relief is getting EVERYWHERE, except NEW Orleans...

A few hundred criminals are causing the deaths of THOUSANDS, but all the cameras are reporting is that nothing is getting through to New Orleans...

Cops have been shot and killed. Ambulances have been looted, shot at and stolen, relief truck drivers have been killed. Helicopters sniped, hospitals attacked and looted, the Guardsmen are scared to death. The local police force has fallen apart...

Surrounding Parishes are doing everything they can to KEEP the problem IN New Orleans to protect thier OWN people! The interview earlier this evening with the St. Joe Parish Commiteeman was telling...

These folks are going to try and blame BUSH for a corrupt DEM-run community tearing itself apart...

Right now I am getting irritated by Larry King who was interviewing Jesse Jackson. When Jesse was seemingly denying the reports of looting and then went on to say that he could not believe rescuers stopped evacuations due to a little sniper fire, and then referred to the fact our troops never let a little sniper fire stop them, Larry did not press him on the issue at all. No, hey Jesse, these are civilians along with some law enforcement doing the rescuing not soldiers. No, hey Jesse, looting for food is one thing, but TV's are not a need especially without electric....And Larry happily says that wee will get to hear more from Jesse tomorrow...hmmm sure am looking forward to those lies here...hope that tomorrow some reporter on some network will call Jesse out for the BS'er he is...

i heard the guy too, what he described was out of a steven king novel....kinda like a prison without guards.

i'm really suprised they thugs havent seized Toyota pickups yet and formed militias to protect their turf....

sorry, that wasn't nice, but the thugocracy that seems to be a large part of the problem has me sitting here shaking my head...

"this may be hallucination"

If it didn't really happen, I'd love to hear what was going on in your life to have you hallucinating about people getting clobbered by airdropped frozen chickens. ;-)

"i'm really suprised they thugs havent seized Toyota pickups yet and formed militias to protect their turf.... "

From a phone call from a man in the French Quarter, they did. Only they 'liberated' Cadillacs from a dealer instead of Toyotas.

Thanks you for the clarification. I had taken my number from an interview done with the head of FEMA, who obviously was not totally in the know... And I agree with you that the mandatory evacuation needed to be called earlier and easily could have...

*** No, hey Jesse, looting for food is one thing, but TV's are not a need especially without electric.***

From the scanners in Louisiana, the State Police have been stopping Looters loaded with gear in stolen trucks from New orleans, all over the state!

A LOT of people saw this as Cash-In time, and went for it, regardless of the cost in thier nieghbors lives...

What kind of a community culture allows that to develop an any kind of a large scale...

Now I ask you - when fancy Euros see poor folks in a horrible natural disaster, they usually collapse upon themselves in tears and lament all that they have lost. America's poor folks, who have decided to stay or couldn't leave, rise up out of the water and give the proverbial middle finger, and are fighting for their very lives. Add to that, after all that mess, there we are - shopping (looting). Yes, it's safe to say, the rest of the world will just never understand us Americans. But you have to admit - I'm sure all of these images are scaring the living hell out of the rest of the world right now. France lost hundreds of folks because it was hot. BECAUSE IT WAS HOT.

That's funny, except that Chicago loses folks because it is HOT... New York as well. This is a national tragedy. It is not a time for trite little stories or cheap anthems. We need to support our own, Americans who are suffering.

I don't know your intentions and I don't mean to take offense, but it just seems to be an odd time to joke about people dying - anywhere. When people die from heatwaves, it is usually the elderly, and the ones who are sick. Hey, what a coincidence - that seems to charachterize the first deaths from Katrina - not just in New Orleans, but in Mississippi and Florida as well.

We need a man like Herbert Hoover again. Or George C. Marshall.

Houston is going to shine thru this.

It's the first city that I could think of that has it all and the people to pull it off with class.

Mark my words.

It pretty well left the host -- was it Aaron Brown - with nothing left to say.

I just keep wondering what rapes, murders, looting, and shootings have to do with being a hurricane evacuee.

Then you would have loved the Sharpton interview. It's crazy. The leftist agenda, downright outrageous lies, just get thrown out by the media, no questions asked.

I heard a citizen call in from the French Quarter who is too scared to even think about trying to leave. He said he heard that the Cadillac dealership near the Superdome had been cleaned out. I know it's hearsay, but those Escalades are a nice ride! (He said he is close to the police precinct in the Quarter.)
