28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

I thought the governor said they still needed to rescue 2-300,000. Of course, she lies.

I don't believe it. Just catching Greta in rerun and she is talking to a woman whose daughter was stranded in New Orleans. Guess who is getting credit for the buses that is getting everyone out of NO???

Jessie Jackson.

Heard it with my own two ears. I thought Greta was going to choke. These people really worship that phoney.

Something else that hasn't been really aired. I know, I said to leave the coulda shoulda for later but it's quiet tonight so....

Plan this massive relief effort for a million people...find places to pre-position the kind of stuff we're discussion here, so that the storm doesn't get it, so that the storm doesn't make it impossible to get it TO where it's needed ( a crystal ball helps here). Ten thousand portolets, 750,000 tents, 100 semi truck tankers of water per day, you get the idea...

Hunker down, the storm is past, and look here!

New Orleans dodged a bullet!

The storm veered east, now all we have to worry about is 160 miles of devastated coast, from Slidell to Mobile. Let's set up at Gulfport for the HQ, we'll need a tent city at...and a field kitchen at ....MASH at....Ok, roll those trucks, let's help those people.

24 hours later....ooops, New Orleans is flooding. They didn't dodge a bullet after all. We are out of position, our plan is totally wrong and we are starting from scratch all over again, 24 hours too late.

See the effect this must have had?

***Blatant racism is not only unwelcome, it has in the recent past caused a N00B to be ZOTted with extreme prejudice.
Until a person has established a rapport with other people here, sarcasm should be noted.***

Trust me... I wasn't being racist. And believe me when I say that was in NO WAY being sarcastic.

It's a simple statement of FACT. We have become so PC, that I just imagine the horror if someone had actually included that in an exercise (Having done MANY CD/SAR exercises myself!)

Yes, there is an operation planned at first light to grab the rest of them by barge or something...maybe the first navy job.

My SIL was asked to drive a truck load of supplies to NO and he said sure. The next day they canceled that run as two of their drivers were killed. They will now go to Jackson and let the Red Cross take it from there.

Who would do this kind of thing? Why? I guess I'm naive. I know this is incredibly sad.

I've been surprised that they at least didn't have some sort of plans to provide emergency sanitation, food and water at the Super Dome, since that appears on the surface to have been the extent of the city's emergency preparedness plan. What did they think the people in there would do after the power went out?

Nah...they released everyone from the county jail per federal regualations that they couldnt guarantee their protection.

Well, that would do it. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Can't worry about protecting innocent people, gotta coddle those prisoners. No doubt they were worried about lawsuits from the ACLU.

Nonetheless, since I've been doing it for decades, I'm still gonna keep lookin under my bed for commie invaders though. Wait, the ACLU's are commie invaders!

The below is from a remarkable New Orleans blog at mgno.com that managed to stay up through Katrina, and is still up.

One of the bloggers interviewed a local cop. Here is the blogger's account of the cop's story:

He turned the corner onto Canal Street and it looked like a flea market. People breaking into every store, going to the neutral gound (median) and trading and selling everything.

They broke into Winn Dixie Monday Night. Do they steal food? No. Cigarettes and liquor. Store was a mess. All the meats were going to waste so the districts went over there to salvage food for officers. Many cops have been eating MREs.

The Iberville Housing Projects got pissed off because the police started to "shop" after they kicked out looters. Then they started shooting at cops. When the cops left, the looters looted everything. There's probably not a grocery left in this city.

Over 30 officers have quit over the last 3 days. Out of 160 officers in his district maybe 55 or 60 are working. He hasn't seen several since Sunday. HQ is closed, evacuated. No phones to contact them.

The buses were discussed in an article by the Times Picayune called Washed Away..they said somthing like when they used them one time only 5 of 25 drivers showed up..Apparently they took no action to insure more would show up (like hazard pay incentive or drive em or your fired) or to at least make sure the buses were fueled up and on high ground..heck the people could have driven them out (apparently one did)...total incompetence of management...no excuses.

Navy has been working down the river, south of New Orleans, with the Bataan.. No cameras down there, so you aren't hearing much about it...

I have actually been to that National Historical Park to the right of the Slip. It is the location of the Battle of New Orleans.

I supose the LSM will be covering this tomorrow or Sat instead of the Prez's visit and I would suspect a speech.

Said this before and I'll repeat it now.

As of midnight Sunday night, there was no power on earth that could have prevented a huge death and damage toll.

A storm vectoring energy equal to one 10 MT nuke every 20 minutes doesn't stop, it doesn't matter if it turns, and it doesn't evaporate.

It is mathematically impossible for it to "miss".

New Orleans may be bleeding to death right now, but the injury was cast in stone before the wind there even became a breeze.

I'm thinking my neighborhood needs to have a plan. I wonder how much a satellite phone costs. It would be good to have one available, and I wonder if a group could purchase one.
