One of our sales reps who lives 200 miles inland from the Mississippi coast said power was available on & off, no gas for "hundreds" of miles and lots of trees down. We finally heard from her earlier today. On her own house the brick chimney collapsed. These were her last words in the email: "You cannot even imagine the devastation taking place over here."
I have heard of another story where a National Guard convoy was having trouble moving south from Meridian thru a national forest area where numerous huge trees had fallen blocking the road. They had to unload some of their heavy equipment just to clear the roads. Downed power lines and flooded underpasses also were hampering progress in getting relief to the coast area.
Army Corp of Engineers says funding levels did not contribute to levee problems in NO; decisions made years ago to build the levees to handle Category 3 contributed to the problem.

What's Scarborough's problem?
What?? .. No asking of prayers for the clouds to clear?
ROFLOL!! That was very good and so true!
It appears that they had a plan to shelter people from the wind. It doesn't appear that they had a plan to cope with flooding. They may have recognized that if the levees broke and the city flooded there would not be much that they could do. I think that the death toll assumed in this "worst case" scenario was much higher than we seem to have.
They probably never contemplated that the levees would break the day after the hurricane.
It's not clear how practical their plans were. I think that Entergy was supposed to set up their command post in the Hyatt Regency. But that is clearly a bad idea, compared with setting it up in Baton Rouge or somewhere else well inland.
1. Welcome to FR Aug 30
2. Your home page says:"Hi. I am NOT a troll. Please don't ban me."
3. What is it with you? "except the New Jersey Patels. "
Got a thing against foreigners?

We moved faster, phenomenally faster, and more effectively in both cases, half-way accross the world than we can here and now. IF we had the same level of control of NO that we did of Falluja after 5days and were only being shot at by the occassional sniper, that would be fine, we'd have the place basically secure. But we don't. The thugs rule the streets.
As far as Thailand goes, WE had a base of ops set up and aid in country and being distributed half-way accross the world in five days. But in NO, where the supplies were "strategically" positioned before Katrina hit, we are helpless. There is no excuse. Incompetence on every level.
send in Rudy. no kidding. millions would feel instant relief at seeing THE MAN at the helm.
She wasn't in a foxhole then.
> The NO people were angry, the Biloxi people were grateful.
Blue state; Red state.
talk radio is going to have to start putting the focus where it belongs. our side needs to learn - you can never be non-partisan with the Dems on any issue. they play every issue for political gain.
That's what I felt too, it would be nice if there was a Mother Abigail, we may need one, the way things are going...
Good news!
the sad thing is joe schmoe who isn't a freeper or a newshound probably saw that and thought "W you are a sick evil man, telling those starving kids they are experiencing a temporary disruption" never knowing the context...
Aaron Brown, mission accomplished.
oh, wait, he's at it again...Brown on the lack of military support, due of course to Iraq.
That isn't true though, that New Englanders are 'stingy'. The reason they came up with that number has to do with how it is reported on taxes. The people of NE are very giving.
Thanks Karl. After we annex Lousiana into Texas, a lot of Americans will have jobs making flags. Still puzzling about how to evenly space 49 stars on the flag, tho'.
However, I am certain that it can be done.
Sh*t. And the whole time I thought it was an act of God. Like tornados in the midwest, or blizzards on the east coast, or earthquakes here in California (or anywhere). Boy you sure have enlightened me.
I wonder why it says "Act of God" on my insurance policy.. I better check that out. hmmm..
Just have the President declare, by executive order, a special election, with the polls located on higher ground. Them buses will be workin overtime. Even the cemetaries will be evacuated.ROFLOL!! That was very good and so true!
Thanks; I needed that.
