Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Our federal gov't officials via FEMA were staging to assist our brothers and sisters in the hurricane affected areas before the storm made landfall. They began immediate movement into the affected areas as soon as the weather cleared. Cable news has nothing to gain by telling us that info.

I understand your reasoning here, but in a national emergency the Federal government can override state authority. If the President were to declare a state of insurrection, then he could send in federal troops without violating the law. This is an extraordinary situation, one in which the federal government has a duty to do precisely what governments are established to do, protect and defend. This is not some fascist or third-world scenario, it's a basic element of the social contract.

Yeah we are still waiting on the southern border for this protection and defense....

"Yeah and imagine the human devastation if you don't. Well, actually, we don't really have to imagine do we?."

Yeah but what you don't realize your Federal Insurrection response is not needed. The National Guard can do all that is needed without canceling everyones insurance The move to declare at state of Insurrection does nothing more than allow you to use men in green clothes when you already can use men in different green clothes.

It seems to me that if we had dropped off water and food in the first place, the "thugs" Dawn53 mentioned wouldn't have had the opportunity to sell water for five dollars a bottle and make it 'unsafe' to drop water there now. I would think Indonesia was 'unsafe' considering that there were openly active terrorists living there.

I've been thinking about TB. Anytime you confine the poor, especially inner city where TB rates are higher, you run the risk for TB. And with the drug resistant TB strains we now have, that could be a nightmare scenario.

Its going to be like the Big Dig tunnel in Boston - times 1000.

One of the things that made the Big Dig such a pain in the patoot was that all the people who lived in Boston were still there. So they had to construct the thing without inconveniencing any of the whiners.

With everybody evacuated, New Orleans urban renewal should be relatively easy.
Just bring in the bulldozers and scrape away anything that ain't worth saving before you let the people come back.

Shooting at rescuers. Rape. Robbery. Beatings. Looting. Total disregard for the lives of fellow humans.

I think I now truly understand why Moral Values was the #1 issue for Americans in last years' election.

"Anyone watching the WWL feed? Where the governor of LA is demanding an apology because she is offended that someone suggested not rebuilding NO?"

Considering the fact that she did a pointless presser with Jesse Jackson and the CEO of Citgo, I believe it.

Did the Senate vote?...MSNBC has breaking news that they passed the 10.5 billion...

It's by "unanimous consent" provided that what comes out of the House is identical to the draft bill.

I heard a woman say on another station she hadn't had a "hot meal" in three days. The media is creating this mess, and they are feeding a lot of it. I said that from the first day.

You're right. It didn't take long for them to go from reporting to creating news. They focus their camera's on isoloated incidents and bemoan that nothing is being done and do not know or care that there are literally millions of other people that are in just as bad shape. As the fireman on TV said, it's a disaster of biblical proportions. It's like focusing on a single grain of sand when the whole stinking beach is being blown away by the wind.

A definite level of tension in the soldier's voice.
