Coast Guard .
The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) worked through the night and has rescued or assisted more than 1,250 people. Secretary Chertoff has authorized the recall to active duty of 550 Coast Guard Reservists to support response and recovery activities. .
USCG ships, boats, and aircraft continue to support FEMA and state and local authorities with rescue and recovery efforts. USCG has also activated three national strike teams to help in removal of hazardous materials; ships and boats continue to support the national relief efforts.

I was recently bummed to find out the ship I served on was offered free of charge to some third world African country, and they refused it.

I would greatly appreciate if anyone knows anything at all about how the town/community of Ocean Springs has fared. It is strange but I can find information about Pascagoula but nothing about Ocean Springs which sits on the east side of the bridge going to Biloxi.
I have an 80 year old aunt and uncle there. They live by the Armory in Ocean Springs which is a good bit inland fortunately.
I have also contacted Gene Taylor their U.S. Representative, but no response.
Thank you so much for any information you have.
My best guess would the state number.
USCG vet here, 44' MLB's at Chetco River, don't eat eggs before the roll!
I have no first hand knowledge about Ocean Springs, but I do know of a person who was evacuated from Biloxi to a home in Ocean Springs--specifically, to a residential area called Gulf Park Estates just off the coast. Don't know if that's any help, except to give some reassurance that Ocean Springs is in good enough shape to take refugees from Biloxi. I'm sure they sustained some damage, but I don't think they'd be sending people there if it was a disaster area.

The Coast Guard has sent a preliminary request for volunteers from the Auxiliary nationwide to participate in Hurricane Katrina. Notices are now working their way throughout the Auxiliary communication chain, asking those Auxiliarists who are physically and mentally capable to volunteer for what is expect several weeks of "arduous clean-up" efforts.

Peanut butter and sardine sandwiches were what we gave the new guys before their first surf ride on a '44. I kinda liked them.

The University of Nebraskas campuses will do everything possible to accommodate college students displaced by Hurricane Katrina. For those students eligible for admission who are unable to return to your home campuses for an indefinite period of time, we will immediately accept as many as we can at our campuses. We will allow you to enroll this fall at in-state tuition rates, and provide assistance in quickly registering you for classes, finding housing and whatever additional help you need. Classes began August 22 in Omaha, Lincoln and Kearney, so incoming students will have a reasonably small number of class days to make up. This is temporary assistance, and when your institutions are able to re-open, we will also help facilitate an easy transfer back to your home institution. Please fill out the form below and a university representative will contact you. You may also call our 24-hour "Ready line" at 800-742-8800. |
