Theres bad news today for the hard-hit Gulf Coast area heavy rain could fall this afternoon and evening in a few heavy thunderstorms across the region.
The good news is that the heavy rain will be widely scattered.
A weak frontal system is sagging southward toward the Gulf today, and it will serve as the trigger for showers and a few thunderstorms.
David Eversole, of the National Weather Service office in Mobile, said any storms could produce rainfall rates of up to two inches per hour.
The scattered thunderstorms may periodically hinder hurricane relief efforts, Eversole said.
Showers and storms began forming shortly after daybreak Thursday mostly along a line from Lake Charles to just north of Lake Ponchartrain, across coastal Mississippi and into south Alabama. The showers and storms were moving along the front, toward the east, at about 6 mph.
Eversole said the showers and storms will be brief but could dump heavy rain during short periods of time.
Any rainfall would be a big problem to relief efforts, especially in the areas of severe flooding around New Orleans.
Heat and humidity will remain a problem today and Friday. Temperatures will remain several degrees above seasonable levels, Eversole said. He said the heat index will climb to around 100 degrees today and Friday, but less humid air will filter into the region Saturday, making conditions more comfortable.
The drier air also will lessen the chances of showers and thunderstorms this weekend.

It is Bush's fault...
No - oh no. Is this strictly Alabama region?
This is actually a good thing - people could use fresh rainwater to drink. Break out the stolen Tupperware.
Save us Kyoto, SAVE US!
Enough is enough Rove!
Heehee.
You're right, though. These people need some fresh water, and they could catch the rain in just about anything.
I'm thinking this is a good thing. Better to drink rainwater than the N.O. street water.
Very true.
