Intelligent design becomes 'universal debate'

...he co-authored with theologian Jay W. Richards called "The Privileged Planet."

The book claims that Earth is so unique, it must have been created by an "intelligent designer."

One Iowa State professor, Hector Avalos, accused Gonzalez of having a hidden religious agenda...Gonzalez's academic archenemy at Iowa State is Hector Avalos, an associate professor of religious studies at Iowa State who is also the faculty adviser for the ISU Atheist and Agnostic Society.

"I didn't expect this level of vitriol," he says after hanging up. "This level of intense hostility, just knee-jerk emotional response from people...."

One of the most surprising discoveries which has arisen from DNA sequencing has been the remarkable finding that the genomes of all organisms are clustered very close together in a tiny region of DNA sequence space forming a tree of related sequences that can all be interconverted via a series of tiny incremental natural steps. Some of us prefer to keep science and religion separate.

Science and religion are not the issue. Science and God seem to be the issue - which are two different things. Whether God exists or not is entirely seperate from whether a system exists to deal with God. So the issue isn't religion. The issue is whether or not there is a God. And the evos and atheists in the scientific community would just rather not deal with the idea of a God they must answer to. They keep saying there is no way to prove God exists. Amazingly, though, everytime they go investigating deeper into the things that make everything tick, it points to a God. How clever. Must be really disappointing to live in a universe where the ultimate search for one's personal truth means denying the truth at any cost. Is that not the definition of delusion and uselessness.

"Intelligent Design" is not a theory. It a cop-out. If it were a theory it would actually require an explanation of the designer and the design process, rather than just referencing "irreducible complexity" or whatever.

What a load of bull hockey. A theory proposing a chicken, having found an egg doesn't require knowing the mind of said chicken. Do you guys bother to actually think critically before uttering such nonsense?

Nobody is talking about pushing a "religion" in science class.
I think the whole idea is to get science back into Science class. And when science evidences a God of the universe, that isn't a religion - it merely gives ground for a religion to exist with utter credibility. That is what actually seems to be the rub. Perhaps that is why you're all so busy about disinformation in this regard. It isn't ultimately about knowing the truth for you guys. Truth for you is immaterial to your own personal denials and whatever means may be necessary to convince yourselves that God can't exist. I like the scripture that states that the evidence of God is found in everything he made such that men are without excuse. But, that isn't part of the ID argument - ID is about the science that notices the evidence and properly notes the obvious. If useful information only arises from an intelligent origen, Science cannot merely ignore this and snow us all about that fact. Mainstream science has attempted to do just that; but, then that's why ID is so appealing. It's nice to have people in there dealing truthfully for once. Evolution will be defunded and scrapped for the lie it is. Kinda warms the heart don't it.

And when science evidences a God of the universe

Intelligent Design doesn't come close to doing this, nor is it science.

Also, I know that new proteins are produced (i.e. for commercial purposes or in biomed research) by means of artificial selection of randomized primary sequences.

Ah, you know that intelligence can direct protein creation/formation under the right circumstances and with the right assistance. But, proteins don't just 'organize' themselves in absence of intelligence. Of course the paradox is that dna won't form in water and proteins won't form in oxygen but can't form without it if my understanding is correct. To the extent you could ever get DNA to form, it still requires an engine to read and act upon it. DNA is not a machine, it is merely the plan for one. And apparently, it is also machine specific.. meaning whatever the plan is, it requires the machine specifically for that plan to assemble it or no dice. The chicken and the egg came at the same time as it were. Creates a rather large problem for spontaneous generation.

Well, of coarse, it is your hope that people will listen to you rather than to the ID evidences so far. The priests of the pagan religions in Rome went nutso when Christianity drew away their followers in droves. It's understandable. If nobody is following, where was their money to come from. The evos are watching the similar situation in science. They are now pagan priests protesting the loss of their livelihoods made off false gods. Get over it.

Hello Havoc:

I have a possible insight that I wanted to run past you. The root word for science is knowledge. The root word for mystery is covered knowledge, and the root word for Babylon is from the Tower of Babel, which was essentially the tower of knowledge. When men built the Tower of Babel, they had started to worship their own works as if they were gods. It is possible that this Scientism is what the Bible calls the world-wide religion, "Mystery, Babylon".

On Patrick Henry's Listolinks is one of Ichneumon posts as a mega-thread:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1457027/posts?page=401#401

This is a very good description of someone wandering through a modern day tower of Babel.

excerpt:
I recently went to a large university library in order to find a copy of a paper I couldn't get online (and PubMed, an online database of biology-related research papers, has over TWELVE MILLION papers cataloged). The archived biology journals filled the second, and half of the third floors of the library. Each volume of bound journals held around a thousand pages, and was the size of a big-city phone book. Each shelf held about twenty volumes in a row. Each 8-foot-tall rack held eight shelves. There were about twenty five racks to a row (fifty when you count both sides of the "aisle"), they were *really* long. It was a chore hiking up and down them. There were about seventy rows. I got lost in them several times. And that was just the one floor, there were more upstairs.
And of course, those weren't all the journal articles, just the ones from the biggest journals, and not a lot of the ones published in languages other than English.
*That's* the kind of magnitude of evidence we're talking about. You could hike into those stacks, walk as long as you like, and then pull out a volume at random and flip it open to any page you chose, and I'd make money betting you that if the exact page you chose didn't contain a study providing supporting evidence for evolution, flipping 2-3 pages on either side would. You could literally spend the rest of your life trying to read it all, and not make it through a fraction of it.

Interesting concept. But, not surprising. Man gains a little knowledge and thinks himself master. It's the spirit of the fall that drives it. And pride is the petrol. Babylon is rebuilt.. literally of it's own original brickwork. For prophecy minded people, that last bit is key.

The tower was felled; but, the city was never outright destroyed. It fell to ruin due to neglect. The persians captured the city without a fight. Cyrus made it his footstool, Alexander made it his capitol city. As late as 75ad, people still lived there; but, a nearby trade city
helped diminish it's importance to where it wasn't real feasable to live there any longer and slowly the city died.
The city became relevant again under Saddam Hussein; but, man has been busily rebuilding the tower of Babel in their own way since it was destroyed.

Man, if he's fortunate, knows 1-2% of his surroundings. God knows everything. It doesn't seem to occur that even if man knew all that God knows, they can't do what God can do. God is God by his very nature. Man is, well, a creation of God.
A clay pot can try as it will, it will never be human. And no amount of peek-a-boo to fool the masses will make man more relevant than God. It's "out of sight out of *mind*" Not out of *existance*. They don't seem to get that in their uber wisdom.
