Yes, I think it is true that voodoo and witchcraft and all sorts of spinoffs are practiced down there.
From there you took a wild leap to infer that I think my deity is responsible for the hurricane. I don't believe that at all. I don't think a loving deity glories in collateral damage of the innocent. My deity is also patient and merciful with evil people, much more than I have patience for.
They may be "more sensible", but the book they claim as their guidance declares a God that has killed [whole cities of] men, women, children, infants, unborn, cats, dogs, chickens, etc., for unrighteousness (basically, anything that goes against His rules). He has done it, and will do it again according to the book the "sensible" Christians claim as authoritative.
Whether what is happening in NO (or even this nation as a whole) falls into this category or not is not any mortal's judgment.. NOR is it their judgment that it is NOT. I would hope the antipathy toward the "doom and judgment" crowd on this board is for lack of decorum, not the message.
You are a hypocrite for arguing against professed beliefs in a God/and His acts that you do not even believe exists.
