Kilgore duels Kaine in hunt for sportsmen

Republican candidate for governor unveils a rival pro-gun group

VINTON -- A shootout for gun owners' votes escalated yesterday when Republican gubernatorial candidate Jerry W. Kilgore announced the creation of a "Sportsmen for Kilgore" coalition that will counter a similar group working for his Democratic rival.

Democratic Lt. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine announced the formation of "Sportsmen for Tim Kaine" on Friday.

But whereas Kaine's group kicked off its campaign last week by arguing that being pro-sportsmen means protecting wildlife, rivers and forests in addition to the Second Amendment, Kilgore's group put its focus squarely on the right to bear arms, claiming that Kaine is an unabashed advocate of gun control.

At a Vinton lodge just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, Kilgore's campaign further emphasized the purpose of the Kilgore coalition by announcing that its chairman is an NRA executive.

"Jerry's values are ours, they're genuine and consistent," said Chuck Cunningham, the National Rifle Association's director of federal affairs and the chairman of Sportsmen for Kilgore. "He's the one you can trust."

The effort by the Kilgore campaign to paint Kaine as an enemy of the Second Amendment and Kaine's effort to distance himself from gun-control rhetoric uttered while he was mayor of Richmond come as both candidates try to cozy up to rural voters, who, presumably, care more about gun rights than do urbanites plagued by crime.

Wearing pleated khaki pants and loafers, Kilgore looked more like a suburban dad than a typical Southwest Virginia sportsman as he addressed supporters at the lodge, but he reminded them that he grew up on a farm in Scott County and has owned a gun for most of his life.

"I grew up around guns," he said. "Protecting the Second Amendment is not just some issue I stumbled upon in an election...

You are either pro gun or anti gun... the 2nd ammendment is more than a photo op, ask john kerry, he will tell ya!! Kerry showed up in 'red states' numerious times last year toting a shotgun, however, informed voters knew he was full of crap. If you want to see who a politician really is, examine his voting record-its just that simple.. The NRA and GOA will tell you who is pro gun and pro hunting..

Fight Crime-Shoot back!
Ted Kennedys car has killed more people than my gun!

BANG!

I served on a similar pro-sportsman gubernatorial committee for my state during our last election.

Whether or not the candidates were pro hunting, pro sportsmen was a big issue in the campaign.

Pay very close attention, during the heated rhetoric of a campaign there are a lot of lies told.

Kilgore has an NRA "A" rating and Kaine has an "F".

'Nuff said.

So how is that tagline coming along?

A few weeks before the elections Kerry went hunting in OH. He was trying to court the RTKBA crowd, but people who care about the issue already knew Kerry's voting record on guns. Kerry only succeeded in reminding gun owners why the couldn't trust Kerry.

Looks like Kaine wants to try his luck with the same stupid ploy.
