President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Tropical Storm 12
I have heard the 250K number on three different channels now Once on FOX from some supposed "expert" on the area. Then on CNN and MSNBC from reporters.
This may be media ramp-up sensationalizing the numbers taking their source from another medias unconfirmed source.
Then again it maybe spot on. I have heard the official number that has been evacuated is over 78K and it sure looks like a crap load of people are still in that area. (Waaaay more that 22K left there it looks like to me)
That's good to hear. I lived in Ponchatoula while I was going to SLU. I loved that town. The Strawberry Festival was like going back in time . . . I guess the strawberry crop will be ruined. Oh, no. You know how suddenly you reach another level of realization . . . I just did.
hard to know if it was genuine - or a clever ploy to buy the Dems some cover as they rev up the "Blame Bush" machine with their media minions. forgive me for being so politically cynically.
Nagin, Blanco, and FEMA- youre fired.
She's so afraid of doing something wrong that she can't do anything right. You can see her "deer in the headlights" look on television. She's an incompetent political hack thrown into a nightmare situation and she's just frozen. Additionally check out my old post here on a psychologial syndrome found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, volume IV - aka DSM IV, summarized below. She has most of the indicia of this. I have no idea whether she was like that before this disaster, but she clearly has it now.
Among other things, she is asserting control by REFUSING to make necessary decisions. Pressure from others to make decisions is resented, and responded to with an obstinate refusal to do what is demanded.

"Governor Blanco has not declared martial law in the areas subject to long-term evacuation, or made THE formal request for federal military assistance. Those require decisions. She's been in full passive-aggressive mode at least since the weekend, and possibly last Saturday and Sunday.
http://www.ptypes.com/passive-aggpd.html
"Here is a hypothetical profile, in terms of the five-factor model of personality, for Passive-Aggressive Personality Disorder (speculatively constructed from McCrae, 1994, pg. 306):High Neuroticism

High Extraversion
Excessive talking, leading to inappropriate self-disclosure and social friction; inability to spend time alone; attention seeking and overly dramatic expression of emotions; reckless excitement seeking; inappropriate attempts to dominate and control others.
Low Openness
Difficulty adapting to social or personal change; low tolerance or understanding of different points of view or lifestyles; emotional blandness and inability to understand and verbalize own feelings; alexythymia; constricted range of interests; insensitivity to art and beauty; excessive conformity to authority.
Low Agreeableness
Cynicism and paranoid thinking; inability to trust even friends or family; quarrelsomeness; too ready to pick fights; exploitive and manipulative; lying; rude and inconsiderate manner alienates friends, limits social support; lack of respect for social conventions can lead to troubles with the law; inflated and grandiose sense of self; arrogance.
High Conscientiousness
Overachievement: workaholic absorption in job or cause to the exclusion of family, social, and personal interests; compulsiveness, including excessive cleanliness, tidiness, and attention to detail; rigid self-discipline and an inability to set tasks aside and relax; lack of spontaneity; overscrupulousness in moral behavior.
Character Weaknesses and Vices*
procrastination

querulousness
obstructionistic behavior

resentful of suggestions
"forgets" obligations
unaware of being incompetent"
It was Blitzer...he said "so poor and so black, bringing questions we will all be asking for a long time to come"...
Is it rude to ask for #XIII?
I wonder if Brit Hume will play the Blitzer clip at the end of his show. That would be priceless.
"Port of New Orleans is open to shallow draft vessels."
Do note how the FEMA guy has to explain to the reporters of what all is going on and that you can't just snap your fingers and it's all fixed
Good for him
After seeing the character that arrived on the renegade bus last night, I got really nervous about who they were letting in there, too... short of doing prison-style searches, how are they going to keep contraband and weapons out of there? Maybe Women and Children should be sent to separate facilities from all the me... otherwise these kids will be forever scared by what they see and experience.
not rude at all...
Levees are being plugged right now. The Army os driving piles into the ground as a barge is dumping sand into the holes. They are also going to drop concrete barriers into the holes also.
We've got an idea for a FReepathon for Katrina victims. Is this a possibility?
FEMA director doing a good job. Just like Jeffe's post.
Holy Cow! "Why Didn't I think Of That" nomination of the year!
Where do I sign up?
Exactly. First they report rumor as fact, and worse, the facts they get right they refuse to provide any of the connecting links. Or legal/constitutional mandates.
Hostages. The ultimate currency.
you mean walk thru water with corpses in it, gasoline in it, looters, snipers, broken sewage lines?
How exactly are you going to "walk out"? You dont live there, you arent there and the people waving at helicopters cant walk out. They would if they could. The convention center is dry, but the surrounding areas are not. Those people may be poor but they arent just alying around and being lazy and demanding that someone come pick them up, they have no way out of the city. How is that so hard to understand? Did you not see the video of the edlery and the mothers with kids? They cant wade thru the city waters and violent streets.
