President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

He stole my parking place!!
how many appearances and statements from Blanco will you have to hear before you will consider this. she is either totally detached from reality, or knows exactly what she is doing.
" KNEW IT----I knew that no matter what he said just now, that even people on FR would bitch...sheesh!!!"
Gee, well excccuuuuuseee me.... From my vantage point, The President's response to this has been thoroughly incompetent from day 1.
The disaster happens... and, after a minute of talking about it, he decides to spend 5 minutes delivering a stump speech about Iraq. BZZZZ. Wrong choice.
New Orleans turns into a warzone, with sub-human animals shooting at relief workers and hospitals, not to mention pillaging, raping, and God knows what other horrors... and President Bush gushes on how glad those folks will be at the tremendous outreach form the American public, and how New Orleans will be bigger and better than ever, just you wait. BZZZZ. BS Meter reaches red.
People die. Evacuated people reportedly causing all sorts of trouble in cities kind (or is that stupid?) enough to have taken them in the first place. Gas goes through the roof, affecting virtually all of us. President Bush smiles, and explains: "Well, gee, um, you know... uh, we have refineries down..." and then hosts a bumbling photo-op so we can all see what wonderful people his Dad and Bill Clinton are. In the midst of a crisis, incredibly poor timing, IMHO.
So tell me what he's done RIGHT, besides relaxing some of the environmental controls on gasoline grades. Has the government decided to forego their $0.37 a gallon TAX on gasoline during the crisis? ... HELL, NO, THEY HAVEN'T. We can just all bend over and take it if we don't like it. Have they sent in the Armed Forces to shoot on sight anyone caught looting, pillaging, raping... etc.? Hell, NO they haven't.
But, um, yeah. We got to remember what Bill Clinton looks like.
Great job, George.
All the stations are showing dead bodies now.

Are you able to view their cam feed? Is it even running?
Thanks
Maybe he's just appeasing the FReepers who refuse to believe there are casualties unless they see them on TV.
Typical.
Yeah, he LOOOOOOOVES this. Loves the spotlight, the stage, the attention.
Thats a FEMA estimate of 503497 people affected by this in NOLA
WOW!!
I wish they would institute some system here to solve the gas line problems. I hate to think how much gas is being wasted by people waiting in lines for hours to get gas. If I hadn't done that yesterday, I'd still have over a quarter tank.
Shove what? The crack?
Here is a website for people that want to offer housing
http://www.katrinahousing.org/listinfo.html
And here is the Freeper thread offering housing to those that need it. If you can help in any way including transporting a family to housing please visit.
"To: Howlin
I'm not going to bash him, but I was dismayed to hear that there is going to be a gas shortage for several weeks. I don't have any gas, I can't go to work, and I have maybe a week's supply of food. I have
plenty of money to buy what I need, but no way to go and get it. I'm now worried about losing my job because I can't get to work. There is no public transportation here. I filled up on Sunday, but because of
the storm and power outage, I've used up nearly a tank of gas trying to find ice, food, and get to & from work. My situation isn't nearly as bad as those who lost everything in the storm, but I can't help anyone
else if I'm stuck at home with no food and no transportation."
Take off your wristwatch.
Nothing ever happens until YOU get there.
Call or send word to your workplace. If they can't help you get in, then put the time off to good use.
If they get tight with you, respectfully keep asking for a break until they fire you, and then immediately file for unemployment.

They should get the people who are shooting people...but, we are still in America and it isn't a war zone, it's a disaster area. People have the right to a trial and jury. There would be massive repercussions around all of the US if police were to start randomly shooting people who are suffering from this calamity. It isn't right. The property is gone and that sucks...but saving lives should be our priority.
Call your employer...See if you can take some of your vacation time, sick leave/personal time....or can do any work at home via your computer. A week or two will make a difference.
