President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks" has been stuck in my head, too. I wonder if Governor Blanco knows the lyrics: "Cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good"?
I agree that there's no doubt a very elaborate plan. But it is beyond question that the local and state authorities are incompetent -- they're paralyzed. The feds are going in with real fire-eaters and clearing obstacles while the locals are wringing their hands.
I have a feeling we'll learn that a lot of "preparedness" jobs were actually patronage positions filled by buddies who had no inclination or ability to actually run an emergency operation.
Its being broadcast on the TEAMSPEAK servers also...
She called her mother who is a nurse staying in NO to care for patients at a hospital and asked what to do, they had it on WWL.
The law, was championed by far-sighted Southern lawmakers in 1878. They had experienced a fifteen year military occupation by the US Army in post-Civil War law enforcement. They understood the heel of a jackboot.
In a nutshell, this act bans the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines from participating in arrests, searches, seizure of evidence and other police-type activity on U.S. soil. The Coast Guard and National Guard troops under the control of state governors are excluded from the act.
Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, testifying in October before the Senate Armed Services Committee, agreed that it might be desirable to give federal troops more of a role in domestic policing to prevent terrorism. "In certain cases we can do more than anyone else in the country because of the special capabilities that we have,'' he said.
Dennis Corrigan, a retired colonel who taught the law at the Army's Judge Advocate General's school, says legislators should resist the urge to change it. The military isn't trained to be a police force, he says, so it should stick to the skills for which it is trained: surveillance, information gathering, logistical support. All of these activities are allowable under Posse Comitatus...

the classic rock stations in NYC are playing that endlessly.
FNC: Three people killed at the convention center last night. Others raped.
Oh yes, let's let the looters live. By all means.
I think I did see him! Wasn't that him riding his cot in the water waving for help earlier? (sarcasm)
What will happen the next time a hurrican aims the the US mainland...maybe next week..will we have demands for a mndatory evacuation..will they demand that transportation and lodging be provided by the government for all those who can't afford it....? stay tuned..
Right now on FOX showing Swat out in the water running with rifles... snipers near the superdome and three people killed last night, chaos after dark... I think some large spotlights would help -- do they run on generators?
turn on FOX- SWAT teams and NG being shot at..near the SD- unsure if anyone is down at this time-
FOX Reporting that police and National Guard are trading fire with unknown people...
3 people KILLED at the SuperDome last night...
Multiple Rapes, Robberies..
From that FOX
"SWAT teams other LEOS came under fire within mile of dome
not clear if any were hit or returned fire
per reporter, neighborhoods are controlled by mobs, ak47s etc.
"situation is more tenuous by the hour and dangerous
They CAN'T get the people out of there, that's the problem, what's the matter with you?
Spare me your empathy with the poor sorrowful looters. Spare me your sympthy with those assholes who are shooting at rescue workers and NG. Spare me your sucking up to buttheads who hold doctors and nurses hostage while they rob a nursing home.
These same would rape you or shoot you in a heartbeat if they wanted to. Or your mother. Or your spouse. Or your kid.
"To: Smartass
Chertoff just confirmed that a National Guardsman DID get shot in the leg yesterday."
That's three.
Scanners had the nurse escaping the lions den hours before the MSM, one.
Scanners had the thigh shot hours ago, two.
Scanners had shots fired at rescue helos, later confirmed by MSM.
Three's the charm for me.
Speculative or not, I'm calling the scanners a legit source from here on.
If DELTA FORCE is indeed landing, the looter problem will dissapate in the next couple days.
They are flying troops BACK from Iraq to deal with this. La. Nat Guard.
I know we're all screaming about the governor. Unless she's totally emotionally incapacitated, I have to believe she's made the request for the active military to be sent it.
I had to miss some of the Homeland Security briefing.
Has the LA Governor done anything to permit the military to operate in a law enforcement capacity in New Orleans?
