I am awake this morning. Frankly I am not giving a damn about the NO levee board. Maybe it is a phase here but NO is gone.
It is hard to wrap the mind around. NO is gone. People are wandering out. Many are dying. The rest is just static.
Maybe the time will come in the endless post mortems that the NO levee board will be discussed in a long article. But this is like some kind of On the Beach scenario going on here. The NO levee board is
past being relevant.
Or that is just how it feels right now.

Denial, anger, grief, depression, acceptence. Even if you don't fit the profile, I've been watching different people go through different stages of it, here and across the nation, since before the storm.
There's an interesting dynamic in play with an event of this magnitude. As the center of the bell curve goes through each successive phase, their combined reaction is affecting the outcome of the very chain of events that set the process in motion.
I would say it's fascinating, but I suspect the truth is that its simply easier to watch all of this from one or more steps removed.
hang onto the bat anyway - seems there is someone on every tv channel...
A few years ago my husband wanted to go to NO. I told him absolutely not. I don't really like to travel anyway, but when I do, a city (except for Charleston) is not on my agenda.
We have friends in our neighborhood who grew up in NO and I knew how dangerous it could be and had no interest in going.
On the contrary for me:
Been there before and will go again. When we see the sunlight, when the city gets restored and avaliable for tourists, I am going to go to the Big Easy at the first opportunity and spend some cash, shop in the stores, and have a good time.
Check this out:
TV networks are hiring retired cops WITH WEAPONS, to protect reporters.

I grew up in Charleston, love it. I was in Columbia during Hugo.
I gotta run.I have the scanner up here at home because of fiber optics but not at work-prayers for all.
Years ago my husband was mugged (not hurt, just handed over his cash) in NO, and he was on Bourbon Street at the time, but he had gotten separated from the group he was with (there with other company employees at a convention), and since he was alone, I guess he was vulnerable.
URGENT SITUATION AT SUPER DOME
I guess we lost the live scanner feed. I did anyway, and can't get it back.
Thanks for all what you and others have posted from that feed.
Something about the place always scared me. We love Charleston and Savannah.
Sounds like Baghdad...hired bodyguards to protect the press.
Are you still on the scanner feed? If so, you're it now. Keep us posted.
We nearly moved to Charleston ... it's such a beautiful city. We love architecture and Charleston has that in spades. So glad they came back from Hugo so well.
We visited the Hugo museum in Mt. Pleasant a few years ago.
Heard that.
Guy was looking for someone in aviation.
I heard that...looking for aviators.
Katie Couric is laying the foundation for "Bush killed New Orleans" on NBC as I type this.
Reading glasses perched on her nose, you'd think butter wouldn't melt in her mouth as she asks the head next to her, "Why weren't the Federal funds made available to fix these old levees?"
Naturally, brother expert's answer fails to mention that the funds were available, but that the city and state refused to match them, as required by law.
Interestingly enough, NBC et al almost appears to be on a crusade to "Save New Orleans, the home of jazz and all we love".
Not that I mind, I hate losing to anyone, even mother nature, but all the same, an editorial decision has been made, and is currently being executed. Anyone want to bet how long it is before the rest of the majors toe the party line?
He is calling for EOC - Urgent Situation at Super Dome - nothing more yet...
