President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Thanks for the info, LR. I saw that the thread was pulled but then I saw that it was up again. I listened so carefully to the scanner talk and just couldn't imagine how anyone could make it sound like it did...sounded real to me. I'll tune in again tomorrow. For now, it's getting late 1:15 a.m. AK time, and it's way past bedtime.

Those people need to get some pride and realize that this is not how Americans act.
My God. People on this thread have made excuses, said the number of thugs is teensy, that people are just hungry and poor.
What we are reading about is people who have gone feral. People who have abdicated being members of the human race. People who look human outside but within have the hearts of animals. Worse than animals.
Lest anyone think I am painting all with the same brush, I am not. No doubt there are many - tens of thousands - of unfortunate residents (former residents) of NO who are virtuous, normal people.
But the percentage of subhuman scum is not tiny. The sooner "shoot to kill" starts happening, the better.
And I could give a **** what color any of them are. I don't have a TV, all I know is words on FR, and the occasional picture. People who steal, loot, rape, shoot at rescue workers, prevent the rescue of the sick, the elderly, the starving - need to be removed from the face of the earth.
The natural disaster administered by water and wind is not the tragedy here. It is human malfeasance and human evil that is the real tragedy.

I am listening to the scanner - the bus convoy has just started rolling. I would imagine that we will see some video of this today - it sounds like they have 500 buses ready to go in one by one.

NEW ORLEANS -- At least 25,000 of Hurricane Katrina’s refugees, a majority of them at the New Orleans Superdome, are traveling in a bus convoy to Houston and will be sheltered at the Astrodome, which hasn’t been used for professional sporting events in years.
