Border Patrol finds 55 illegal immigrants in a refrigerated truck

EL CENTRO, Calif. - Fifty-five illegal immigrants from Mexico were found in a refrigerated truck with an internal temperature of only a few degrees above freezing, the U.S. Border Patrol said Tuesday.

The migrants had crossed the U.S.-Mexico border near Yuma, Ariz., Monday and had been in the truck only a half-hour or so when they were found, said Border Patrol Agent Amber Galloway.

The men and women appeared to be in good health, Galloway said. They were being held at the Calexico, Calif., Border Patrol station where they will be processed and returned to Mexico with a warning.

A Border Patrol agent made the discovery shortly after 11 p.m. Monday as he grew suspicious while questioning the truck driver at Border Patrol checkpoint along westbound Interstate 8 near Winterhaven, about 150 miles east of San Diego.

Peering into an access port to view the contents of the trailer, the agent noticed clothing and saw something move.

The trailer was hauling a load of lettuce along with its illegal cargo of people and the internal temperature was set at 37 degrees.

Truck driver Miguel Angel Quintero Ramos, a legal U.S. resident, was arrested for alien smuggling.

Carl L. McClafferty, the chief patrol agent in the El Centro sector, called the incident "an example of how smugglers, literally, treat the people in their trust like nothing more than a commodity."

Cool and the gang?

They're not "immigrants" at all, but illegal invaders.

So what did they do with the illegals?

Release them into the US, telling them to appear in court at a later date for their hearing?

My a$$ they will be sent back.

They will be on the street in the US tonight if not already released pending their extradition hearings in tree or more months.

We have our heads up our a$$es if we believe this crap.

What you are describing happens to illegals from countries other than Mexico - like Brazil.

Mexicans are sent straight back to Mexico without passing Go or collecting $200.

If that's what comes into America with Mexican lettuce, I'm giving up salad immediately. Is this just one of the "benefits" of CAFTA?

ROTFL! Seriously, I make sure the produce I don't grow myself is made in the USA... although I'd prefer mechanized pickers instead of illegal alien pickers.

Only OTMs (Other Than Mexicans) get this treatment. For Mexicans, they can fight their return to Mexico, but if they do and lose, they're tagged as having been legally removed from the country and face criminal charges if they're caught again. Consequently, most opt for the "voluntary return," which carries no penalties if they're caught trying to cross again. The whole system is absurd, and we might as well erect a sign saying, "Immigration laws not enforced here."

Truck driver Miguel Angel Quintero Ramos, a legal U.S. resident, was arrested for alien smuggling.

Ramos should be slapped with a $1 million bail, and if convicted, given a five year jail sentence.
