Director Steven Spielberg has infuriated the residents of Budapest, Hungary with his disrespect of their daily lives, while filming new movie Munich. PageSix.com reports fuming locals have faced an array of irritations since Hollywood came to town, including having their cars, which were in Spielberg's way, towed with barely any notice, endless traffic jams and severe warnings should they attempt to take pictures of the proceedings. And city-dwellers are particularly amazed by the Americans' arrogant attitude - as they assume Budapest should be honored to be the Oscar-winning director's chosen location. A source tells PageSix.com, "The best part is (Spielberg's people) keep saying, 'This is the biggest thing ever to happen to Budapest,' which is true if you discount the whole Roman and Ottoman Empires, World Wars I and II, the fall of communism and the European Union's accession."

Ivan,
Some of the walkways I traveled down still had the bullet holes from that event. Walking the national and military museums and the catacombs was truly an astounding adventure in itself.
All of the Hungarians I met were extremely nice people.

You know, people from the real world. Speilberg and the other celebs try to make movies about those "types". Shame is, they don't really know any of them and then proceed to insult them with their guesses about what "real people" really are.
I know for a fact that I have an easier time relating to people from very distant countries and cultures who also happen to be just regular people, than I do with any of the self-annointed "high arts" types that I run across.
They really do live in their own little world, perfectly isolated from the real world and totally befuddled by trying to understand people who aren't one of "them".

"It [Hollywood] is one of America's greatest achievements though. So is tobacco.
Both give pleasure, but I wonder which has caused more suffering.

I don't know quite know how to respond to that. You're comparing the Arts to a carcinogen?

Not really. But WOTW was virtuoso filmmaking.

They should treat Speilberg like they treated the Red Army in 1956.

I'm not questioning what Schindler did, although I believe Keneally's point in "Schindler's List" was that Schindler did not fit our image of a hero, the guy was quite complicated.
I just can't trust a guy like Spielberg to let the story tell itself, and the movie came off phony to me. Even putting aside Spielberg for the moment, it's hard for any movie to convey the true horror of concentration camps with well-fed actors playing the parts of the inmates.

There's been a ton of great films that are Art every step of the way to come out of the Hollywood cinema.
