It's a mistake and truly unrealistic to expect 100% satisfaction with the President on 100% of the issues. Going to Iraq is something which the President did almost (in terms of global opinion) independently. It can be remembered that other nations came with us, notably Gr. Br. and Italy and Poland...but in fact the major European powers who were expected to support the US and President Bush were not only refusing but were opposing his action. That we even went and have achieved the success we have is a monumental world event...time will reveal just how monumental this is. In fact, I always marvel at just how brainless most critics are in their treatment of our anti-terror war. If they possessed any understanding of history or military/political history, the absolutely seismic nature of the coalition success against terror would be plain. No objection could be possible to anyone who understands how this world is put together.

Why, oh why on earth would you just leave the bodies floating around?

Given the choice to remove a floater or rescue a helpless victim to safety, what would YOU do?

What's making me crazy is that the mayor of NO is not up on I-10 telling those people what to do.

That's exactly what I've been thinking. During Shep's report, he was saying how there was no water, no food. What is so difficult about getting them water? Fly a plane over and dump some bottles!!! Crimony. /exasperated...

When we have the greatest human disaster that this country has experienced, totally destroying a major city in the USA, he's got to stay at the ranch for a last round of horse shoes.

How disappointing. I expected to hear it from Jack Cafferty (CNN) yapping where is our President, where is our President AS IF GWB was expected to personally help in the rescue effort, but not from a FReeper. FYI, our President already had his administration IN MOTION ON SATURDAY (two days prior) preparing for what might be. Both Landrieu (D) and Breaux (D) couldn't praise his quick efforts enough -- all overlooked by the Caffertys of this world.

What does TPTB stand for?

Despite my frequent visits to DU, I have to admit that that one has me stumped as well.

I have deciphered many of their other snappy and mysterious shorthands though:

BFEE = Bush Family Evil Empire - They control everything, including oil prices, strokes, undersea volcanos and hurricanes.

And when discussing 911, Bush's role in the attacks can only be framed under the two LIHOP ("let it happen on purpose") and MIHOP ("made it happen on purpose") scenarios. Mossad figures prominently in the planning no matter which scenario you buy into.

If you even suggest that the 911 attacks were actually an islamic terrorist operation, you are dismissed as a dupe of the rightwing controlled NYTimes Rovian mouthpiece.

It really is a fun place to visit, just to explore strange life that inhabits it, like a deepsea hot smoker or the atmosphere of Titan.

Have you considered that some of these companies are worldwide???

Yeah, and in Europe the refining companies sell gasoline for the equivalent of $6-$7/gallon or more.

I used to work for an oil refining company, and I one day asked the director of marketing how it was decided where to set the wholesale price for gasoline. He gave me a long convoluted answer, but it basically amounted to this: we set our price as high as the market will bear. Period. No relation to supply or cost of production...(well, actually, the base price will reflect supply and cost of production, but these aren't the only factors in the price of gasoline). It's whatever they can get. The principle factor in the setting of prices is what the competition is charging. If the price of gasoline starts spiralling upward, it's like a thermal, carrying everyone up with it. That's what I was told, by the refinery's marketing director.

would be nice if started with "We are a nation at war...

before he goes on to talk about NO, etc. People are not living their lives like we are in a war for our survival and especially are not acting like we intend to win it.

Long ago I decided to not move to NO exactly because of this danger. It was just waiting to happen and the situation of the city looked like they were on borrowed time. I would have been out of there the minute the track moved past Florida, without waiting for the Mayor to state the obvious.

The behavior of the governor and mayor is exactly what we can expect if we ever let a democrat near the White House again.

don't see how. The thread is titled "President Bush To Address Nation At 5 Pm". He hasn't spoken yet.

Precisely. But since we assume he'll be talking about the impact of Katrina, one of it's major impacts that will affect everyone will be the price of fuel.

I just hope he doesn't say anything about the country being in a "malaise."

I know what you're saying.

Choose (very carefully) where you want to live. Look at all possibilities/ what ifs.

There is plenty of blame to go around, and the Governor and Mayor is a good place to start. I can't even comprehend how this could be allowed to happen in this country. It's pitiful.

What is your problem? If you want to defend total incompetence, be my guest.

As one who witnessed Ivan last year, this situation is nearly identical (only bigger and over a much larger area than any hurricane in modern history)and it takes time to react to the situation. Adequate notice was given to the inhabitants of the area. There was no mistaking Mayor Naggin's pleas for evacuation.

Relief supplies are staged outside of the affected areas and need time to be brought in and distributed. This becomes very slow when you are hampered by roads and bridges being destroyed. Hampered by numerous law enforcement agencies establishing control over their areas while trying to turn back the hordes of evacuees wanting to return to their lives.

You obviously have never been confronted with dealing with requests of millions of people both inhabitants and well meaning friends and relatives using every conceivable means of communications tying up phone lines, roads, bandwidth, delivery services, etc. Come back in a week and see how much has been accomplished before throwing out criticism of those first responders.

If you have ever had a car breakdown on a trip out of town, you know it's going to take the rest of the day and proably most of the next to get back on the road. Now throw in the fact that the nearest unaffected tow truck is a hundred miles away, the parts have to be manufactured cause the inventory is depleted, and the mechanic is busy trying to rescue his family from a flooded neighborhood and you have the makings of a long delay. Hindsight is always perfect.

Having a couple of spare bridges that can be flown in and set-up in a matter of minutes along with thousands of tons of supplies delivered to your door would be great wouldn't it? Why I don't even hold my pizza delivery driver to their 30 minute guarantee anymore.

Arrogant, omniscient jerks that think a natural disaster = incompetence and no planning. You're a disgrace.

Well, I'll be quite shocked if he echoes your constant harangue of evil oil companies and obscene profits. But, if he does so at 5:00pm, I'll be happy to admit your were right.

There are cars driving up there, where is the Red Cross, I helped clean up a tornado stricken area in 1984. 14 tornadoes went through Ohio and Pa in one night. I was a summer worker with the Ohio Dept. of Transportation. There is NO warning with tornadoes. It happened at rush hour, the National Guard was there within hours to secure the areas, we were there the next morning, the Red Cross was there with us. The Governor flew in, WHY? Because Ohio and PA have a PLAN! Electric company, the gas company name an agency they were there. It took us three weeks of 16 hour days to clean up the mess. That was with thousands of people helping.
