German Papers:Katrina Should be A Lesson To US on Global Warming
Spiegel Online ^ | Today | Brainhose

Posted on 08/31/2005 4:05:23 AM PDT by Brainhose

Seems like everything is President Bush's fault. One day after Katrina hammered the Gulf Coast, German commentators are laying into the US for its stubborn attitude to global warming and Kyoto.

AP Fun-loving New Orleans, now a disaster area. Hurricane Katrina is big news for German commentators, whatever their ilk. For some, the powerful storm which slammed the Gulf Coast on Monday, is a symbol of the sort of environmental terrors awaiting the world thanks to global warming and proof positive that America needs to quickly reverse its policy of playing down climate change. For the more conservative, it is simply another regrettable natural catastrophe.

Regardless of how one views it, Katrina has not only devastated parts of Louisiana and Mississippi and killed dozens, it also has threatened the US and its trading partners with economic instability. The Gulf Coast states refine about 30 percent of America's oil supply and Katrina's damage is threatening to cause already-high oil costs to skyrocket. The fun-loving town of New Orleans, beloved for its moody, French-inspired bars, crooning jazz riffs and free-for-all Mardi Gras spirit, has transformed into a watery ghost town, with 80 percent of the city's 480,000 residents obeying the mayor's call to evacuate. The pictures tell it all: frantic racing through chest-deep water, flooded city streets and uprooted trees. The storm even ripped off a chunk of the roof of the New Orleans Superdome, where close to 10,000 people had run to for cover.

Leave it to the Krauts to kick someone when they are down. It seems like Die Welt was the only paper that had a rational viewpoint.

I guess someone had to say it.
It's Bush's fault.

Sorry? WHEN did the Germans require unleaded gasoline?

Since they care so much about the environment.

I listened to BBC World News this AM...The hurricane aftermath got about a 30 second segment.

Here was the funny part. They had picked up the lib line that the President had to return to the White House early because he was on holiday and the way it was worded was definitely intended as a derogatory remark.

BUT...

When they mentioned that Kofi Annan was on holiday and had to return to the UN, the phrasing was totally different, "He had to interrupt his holiday...." and it sounded like he was making a great sacrifice.

Well, what should I expect from the BBC, LOL!

Interesting that the reporting runs across party lines. The SPD is blaming it on global warming. And they are focusing on the far left papers.

Now that the german race has been "trained", over the last century not to make war, they have become sniping little weasles.

How french of them.

Capital letters should be used for proper names--formal, official names of things and people ... Burp!

You are correct. But of course for all of the years in which we had unleaded and they didn't, we get the blame?

This does not speak well of their intellectual development. Someone once told me that after the second World War, so many educated persons had been killed that there was a real strain to find people to teach in the schools. Sometimes the schools got lucky. Sometimes they got stuck with pinheads.

Guess who prevailed?

Here are my thoughts on this subject.

If we are to believe the germans, a number of MSM media organizations, including NBC and the Weather Channel and the Democrats, Hurricane Katrina is our fault and that we need the Democrats and the U.N. to take charge of this country and control our lives.

I have four words to say about this analogy.

GIVE ME AN F**KING BREAK!!!!!!

This is the same old tired peice of balderdash that has been proven time and time again to be false and baseless and yet we are expected to believe this B.S. and C.F. because we have way too many freedoms in this country and we need the Dmeocrats and the U.N. to step in and control our lives. This is what it's all about.

This kind of nonsense is why news organizations like NBC and CNN are contuining to lose audience and why the Democrats will never gain any power in this country. The Weather Channel by choosing to buy into this B.S. and C.F. has lost all credibility as far as I'm concerned.

Whether anybody wants to believe it or not this is a normal pattern that we're in and for the enviromentalist wackos and the politicians to use and exploit such an unfortunate event like this for personal and political gain is utterly disgraceful and reprehensible.

Anyone that buys into this kind of nonsense really needs to have his or her head examined.

Regards.

Or...they are just looking for an excuse to add a tax to something we all use on a daily basis. Gotta keep those revenues flowing in.

When we need advice from a country who started two world wars, we'll ask for it. They might offer something of more value than their two-cents-worth considering how we rebuilt their country and protected it for the last 50 years. You'd think they'd have enough on their plate with 11% unemployment in their socialist paradise, but you can always depend on the Germans to think they are superior no matter the evidence.

Wow. And all of this time I just thought it was a major hurricane hitting during the height of hurricane season. I wish I could be as enlightened as they are.

US Papers: Body odor should be warning to French on personal hygiene.
Sure I haven't heard the French chime in yet, but it's only a matter of time.
