Law enforcement efforts to contain the emergency left by Katrina slipped into chaos in parts of New Orleans Tuesday with some police officers and firefighters joining looters in picking stores clean.
At the Wal-Mart on Tchoupitoulas Street, an initial effort to hand out provisions to stranded citizens quickly disintegrated into mass looting. Authorities at the scene said bedlam erupted after the giveaway was announced over the radio.

Martial Law was called in Kansas City, MO in 1951 during the massive flood and looters were shot on sight by National Guard. Never asked any questions just shot looters but that was before lefties had their say on "Freedom Fighters." "nuther NRA Life Member too. . .
A concept termed "atavism," if I recall.
It'll be, almost literally, a night of the living dead experience. Creepy.
I would hate to be the lone cop that's not looting, limited number of bullets to protect myself too.
NO's screening processes leave something to be desired
You're right. More info than you wanted. LOL

I would say your term applies.
Be kinda hard to go get more bullets wouldn't it??
I imagine that whatever is in a cruiser isn't going to last long in the midst of the mob.
No need to apologize.
NOPD living up to its reputation and NOFD sinking to new lows. Probably authorized by their pubic unions.
"Another man rolled a mechanized pallet, stacked six feet high with cases of vodka and whiskey. Perched atop the stack was a bewildered toddler."
Oh my, heavens, no no no, can't do that, don't want to upset the touchy feely PC crowd, heaven forbid a criminal be shot, that's a no no /sarcasm
I say, all it takes is one shot and the looting will stop instantly, and one shot at an illegal crossing the border and the invasion will stop, instantly.
OMG you are going to get flamed,,,,,it's ok to steal clothes and groceries according to several people on another thread. Morals you say??? Hell no, let's twist the morals to suit our needs, hell with the deed.
"Really, I'd like to see a link that shows where firefighters and law enforcement were looting during a disaster."
That wasn't my point, but Google it and you'll find some. I'm touching that sort of link with a 10 foot pole on this thread.
Human nature is what it is and it is not limited to New Orleans or occupation.
I have no stake in defending New Orleans, BTW.
If you want to argue that looting doesn't occur when the slightest opportunity presents itself - regardless of geography, then we can talk about that - which was my point at the comments that imply New Orleans is somehow uniquely depraved in comparison to any other urban area.
"One must be careful not to jump to conclusions without the big picture of what is going on."
On the other hand, if you had bothered to read the article, you would know that the cops were looting.
"Some officers joined in taking whatever they could, including one New Orleans cop who loaded a shopping cart with a compact computer and a 27-inch flat screen television."
"Not all that different from Baghdad, right?
Isnt the mayor of NO a dem? And, I guess....this will be Bush's fault, right?"
Is this the part right before you accuse me of being a troll, from DU, or a RINO, or do you need to bring up some other clever vignette first?
This is classic human nature. Look at the LA riots, NY blackouts, or Baghdad, if you must, but nonetheless it is and was entirely predictable.
Makes me wonder just how quickly our polite society would break down in the event of a nation wide disaster. Hand cannons and lots of ammunition are my friends.
