I saw where Wal-Mart was donating a million to the Salvation Army (not Red Cross). I was impressed with the choice of the SA.
That's the Governor... not the Mayor. He (the mayor) makes her look like a genius.
The Governor was asked about the water, and then she said, "It's just water" but went on to mention that all the cars are submerged. Well, duh, I guess she doesn't see the oil slicks on the water everytime they zoom in on a submerged car.
Seems to me they should be warning people to stay out of that water, if at all possible.
You may be right, abandon in place and rebuild somewhere above sea level.
my husband works at a Lock & Dam - most likely they opened up the gates before the hurricane hit and lock will have it's own generator.
I don't think we can properly understand the magnitude of this from where we sit.
Whatever the political thoughts are on the governor, she may very well know that the city is lost, at least to the extent that "cajungirl" would agree. I'm sure there are enough knowledgable people contributing their prognosis to this dire situation.
I'm not speculating on what the truth is, but the actions of local officials do not evoke a whole lot of hope.
The movie was called "Oil Storm" and was on FX last June (part was filmed here in Austin). Basic premise is that a major hurricane hits the New Orleans area Labor Day weekend, 2005. Because fo the resulting damage, oil prices spike upward and gas goes to $3+ per gallon. Because of the damage, oil imports are diverted to the Port of Houston. Because of the tight shipping lanes and increased traffic, there is an accident between tankers thats damages the port. Terrorists hit Saudi oil sites, we send in the military to protect the oil infrastructure, all the while oil prices continue to climb. At it's worst, the price per gallon is over $8 and the economy is in crisis. People freeze to death because they can't heat their homes, riots break out, we get in a bidding war with China over Russian oil supplies, etc.
Salvation army...go to local hospital and give blood.......gather blankets, water, food Baby diapers and formula from your local neighborhood, get in car (or big truck) and drive it down there.
BTW if there are any FReepers in NW PA that are considering going down there to help I have baby things and some food I can/will send down for the survivors. Right now locally the only donations being taken are monetary and I simply don't have any, only material things that could be of help.
Seriously,
Right now fluids are fluids, so beer counts (and it may make the time pass easier too!)
Otoh, AIT's post immediately after yours helped, in typical FReeper dry wit fashion.
ps:
and JUST when I was about to work up a drop of sympathy for those two ladies, Landrieu had to open her mouth about 'major legislation we've introduced to blahblahblah' !
grrrrr, talk about horse/barn door...
and THE lock will have it's own generator.
There is a link up top to a discussion thread started for blame casting, Monday morning quarterbacking, anathemas against the Democrats, and whatnot.
Thanks for the new thread, NN.
Are we opening up our homes to Freeper survivors yet. We can take a family of 4. We have food, water, housing and good schools.
I heard yesterday, somewhere, that the Saudis have said they will crank up production as much as they can, and urge other OPEC members to do the same.
Problem is, crude is not what we need. We got crude. We need refinery capability.
An economist was on FOXNEWS earlier who said that states have erected such regulatory and environmental barriers that there's no incentive for oil companies to build refineries.
Just watching some of the presser..Blanco is pathetic..can't utter a cogent thought. Landrieu is like her ventriloquist..putting words and thoughts in her mouth..Blanco is a one-term wonder..and the Mayor of NO is hopeless..You think 9/11 is bad in NYC, where 4 years after we still have a BIG hole in the ground..the chaos in NOLA is gonna be 10x worse..the chaos in I predict that Bobby Jindal will run for governor, promise to fix it..and he will win..
She looks to be on the verge of a breakdown to me as well. She is clueless for the most part and other people have to answer the questions.
FOX has been utterly embarassing during this. They are still going about regular programming. They actually have Cavuto on. I like Neil, but seriously.
I have heard that CNN is doing a good job, I'm switching over, though, I hate to.
One poor man was a double amputee and was found hanging in a tree.
Maybe they will re-show it -- pretty sobering. Bottom line is this is the kind of disaster China has been waiting to befall us to give them the upper hand in the energy markets.
Couldn't Americans get together & do what you think China wants to do? Citizen owned? It would just need organizaion.
