Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

Yes, his wife, her name was Mary. And he was very old. He tried to hold her hand when the surge came and he lost her. It was heart breaking. It really upset my husband. He looked over at me and said "I think I could hold on" and started to cry.
It's slow going when multifple roofs have blown off....multiple screens need repairing....schools are damaged.....businesses destroyed...
..It all takes time.
Common reaction. You have to take care of you, first. Can't help other's unless you are in position to do so. If that means taking an hour off, so be it. If it means a day off, so be it. Disaster relief is just as stressful as living through the disaster itself. You have a feel for where your limits are, and you should respect those inner voices.
Do what you can, take a break, and then come back for another round. After a while, you'll establish a rhythm.
I know ... I've had lumps in my throat for a while now - but that's the one that made me start to cry..
I can't help but think about now only New Orleans -but that whole gulf coast.
I belong to another board where we've not heard from one of the members.. she lives east of New Orleans. Also on the board is a member whose sister in law lives near Biloxi. The sister in law stayed.. the member is near panic I think as they cannot contact the sister in law. It's brining it very near home now - even though we just talk to people "electronically" you do develop bonds...
Astrodome is empty? What about the old lakewood church facility?
I will watch fox, just not shep. Howlin posted the video links last night. Thank god for the freepers.
Prayers to all freepers who losses in Slidell and surrounding areas.
And, regardless of the follies of the National organization, the Red Cross has outstanding logistical capabilities. They have the means to get the job done. Time to put aside the misgivings and let them do what they do best.
We need to build a Redneck Monaco now somewhere on our Riviera. Should probably be a little further inland though. Lost New Orleans could be the marina.
Has the salvation army mobilized?
With all due respect to those in need, the red cross has a terrible rep for handling money.
Gulf shores and Orange beach have been called (Redneck Riviera) since the late 50's thank you. And we are damned proud of the name. Kenny Stabler went to school in Foley Al and lived in Orange beach w/his grandmother and that is what we used to call it before the (Yankees) found it.LOL
I hope they run Blanko and Nagin out on a rail. Their lack of leadership and delaying telling people to leave is criminal.
Fox played that interview this morning too. I guess they got it from CNN. It was heartbreaking.
Prior to the storm, it was estimated that major flooding into NOLA would take ten weeks to resolve.
Found on Sunherald.com: The southern area of Diamondhead below Interstate 10 has been heavily damaged.
Moderator, can we start more specific threads? Maybe one for LA and another for MS? People looking for specific info will find it easier to focus on their area of interest.
Thanks
I watched that clip this morning and it's the last news clip I've been able to load and watch.
The Times-Picayune staff is evacuating their building in New Orleans.

I am with you on CNN, but am now watching that brain-addled Cindy S on an ad on CCN. First time I saw it. Last time, too. Zap - back to Fox.
New Orleans is having a bad day, and a bad week..but it is not dying...keep the faith. I know that this is a hard one to take..but this mess will be cleaned up and New Orleans will be back up and running soon.
