Man Arrested in Practical Joke Gone Awry

Savannag, GA - A Savannah man was arrested after he told a 13-year-old girl to hand a note to a bank teller threatening a holdup, police said.

Michael Lyons, 45, told police that he and a group of girls celebrating his daughter's birthday were trying to play a practical joke. The note said "Give me all of your money, this is a stick up," according to a police report.

While Lyons was getting money out of an ATM on Friday, the girl went into the bank and handed the note to a teller.

The teller sounded the bank's alarm and police and FBI surrounded the building searching for suspected burglars.

Instead, they found Lyons and the group of girls.

Lyons was charged with criminal attempt of robbery by intimidation, said Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police spokesman Bucky Burnsed.

"You can't yell fire in a crowded theater, can't joke about a bomb in your luggage at the airport, and you can't write notes to cashier that say 'This is a stick up,'" Burnsed said.

She looked at it and asked if I'd written anything on the back.

You know, that's a very smart play on her part.

If you HAD written it on the back, then you would have said YES, and she would have treated it as a robbery.
Since you said NO, she realized that you picked up a publicly available document , and weren't a real robber.

She could have just hit the alarm button, and caused you no end of grief.

I think he just posted that he needs to use the /sarcasm tag more often. In other words, he was joking about how 'funny' the note was supposed to be.

The truly jackass move was that he got a bunch of teenage girls involved.

Imagine if it was YOUR 13 year old daughter who was tricked into giving a stick up note to a teller.

The cops should lighten up. This is a very funny stunt.

Yeah, up there with calling in a bomb threat for an airplane (or anything). I mean, empty the terminal, turn th plane around if in flight, spend countless hours and thousands of dollars checking everything out. I am sure this was similar. Cops dispatched, teller probably damn near had a heart attack, bank operations screwed up for the rest of the day....

Hilarious.

Please note post #7. I guess it wasn't obvious enough, but my original comment was tongue in cheek.

I was not SERIES, as they say around here.

You can yell fire in a crowded theater if there is a fire. Joking about a bomb in your luggage is not the same as having a bomb in your luggage. Same for a stickup note versus a real stickup. The guy is a dumb ass, but why charge him with criminal attempt of robbery by intimidation?

Oh and I didn't address that to you because I think you're taking his side-- I just didn't want to pile on Mike Bates. :o)

The guy was too stupid tp be left in charge of children, and anyone who thinks this is funny is close behind.

Now, writing "This is a stickup" on every deposit slip (or printing it on someone's order of deposit slips) WOULD be quite a practical joke!

If you've ever worked for a bank when one of the branches has been robbed, you lose all perspective about what might or might not be funny regarding hold-up practical jokes.  It sends a chill through the entire company.

As stupid as it sounds, the tellers were probably scared to death:  it's not the least bit far-fetched to believe a bank robbery might use a young girl to pass a note to a teller in a real robbery.

At the police station, the arrestee was heard to say about the teller, "Oh, she was just so stuck up!"

Yeah, but will you send me money for the mental trauma I've suffered?

How many regulars on FR would actually think the guy's stunt was funny? Not many I suspect. Yet for some reason a number of FReepers believed that I did. Interesting.

[Lyons was charged with criminal attempt of robbery by intimidation] Translation?

Basically, "attempted unarmed robbery".

Oh, I'm sorry. Was that you? I'll take better care next time, and maybe even read part of the thread.
