President Bush Vows to Help With Border Problems NewsMax.com Wires Monday, Aug. 29, 2005

EL MIRAGE, Ariz. -- President Bush said Monday he will work with Gov. Janet Napolitano and other border governors to secure the U.S.-Mexico border, where political leaders have been calling for help to deal with waves of illegal immigrants.

Bush told a crowd in this retirement community that he understands the federal government's obligation to enforce the border.

"It's important for the people of this state to understand, your voices are being heard in Washington, D.C.," he said.

Making reference to Sen. Jon Kyl, an Arizona Republican who introduced Bush here, the president said, "This senator and this Congress are going to work closely with the administration to make sure we have the resources necessary to do our responsibility, which is to enforce this border. And we'll do so."

Bush made the trip west from his Texas ranch to lend a hand to the administration's effort to sell older Americans on the value of a prescription drug benefit that begins next year for Medicare patients.

Trying to combat confusion about and criticism of the new government drug plan, Bush was making appearances in both Arizona and California Monday to talk it up.

After spending the night in San Diego, he speaks on Tuesday at the Naval Air Station North Island there to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. His remarks focus on fighting terrorists and the ongoing campaign in Iraq. They recall the Aug. 14, 1945, Japanese surrender that came just days after the United States incinerated the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with atomic bombs.

There has been indications that efforts to build support for the Medicare drug benefit - including a few other appearances around the country by Bush - are paying off. Congress allocated about $300 million to an awareness campaign.

A recent survey from the Kaiser Family Foundation found for the first time that people were as likely to have a favorable view of the plan as to have an unfavorable view. Still, the survey found that more people do not plan to enroll than do.

The prescription drug benefit kicks in Jan. 1. About 43 million beneficiaries will be able to choose from two or more private plans that offer drug coverage.

Enrollees will pay a monthly premium averaging about $32, but the amount will vary among regions, and millions of poor people will pay nothing. Beneficiaries will also have a $250 deductible, meaning they will have to pay that amount for their prescriptions before the drug plan covers expenses. Again, millions of poor beneficiaries will not have any deductible.

After spending more than four weeks operating from his Texas ranch, Bush returns to Washington on Friday. © 2005 The Associated Press

Tancredo's plan is acceptable because it is not amnesty. You can trivialize that as a "detail" all you like, but the reality is that it makes a very substantial difference.

Very true. And Tancredo's plan is also acceptable because it does not allow any guests until very rigorous enforcement criteria are met. This prevents another bait and switch like we got with the Reagan Amnesty where we were promised enforcement but it never materialized. Tancredo's plan is better than the other two because it puts enforcement first.

Lumping me into whatever group it is that you call the "Tanc-is-God" crowd. Im not a big supporter of Tancredo first of all. The "Tanc-is-God" crowd is obviously not meant as an endearing term so I take it as an insult.

Thank you mthom, you are the only one honest enough to answer the question.

Attrition. To give credit where credit is due, this is Mark Krekorian's thesis.

Krekorian also referred to it as downsizing.

When it was posted at FR, many called Krekorian OBL. If Tancredo is following Krekorians plan, he is also OBL.

The impression I've gotten is that there are a few FReepers who have always disliked GWBush and are simply using this issue on which to attack him.

I voted for GW twice and so have many, even most, Freepers who don't like his inaction on illegal immigration. His sucking up to Fox, the leader of a corrupt crime ridden pesthole that foists it's unwanted citizens on us.

If Tancredo's plan doesn't deal with 10-20 million illegals, it is seriously lacking.

Well, now all you have to show that Tancredo really is following this Krekorian character, and to show exactly what that guy's plan was.

I understand. I would also be insulted if I were linked with Tancredo.

I apologize.

I'm starting to get the impression that you're talking out of both sides of your mouth. You say that we can't deport that many illegals without screwing our economy, and then you criticize Tancredo's plan for not dealing with them fast enough for you. Since you're such a stickler for "honest" answers, perhaps you can answer honestly what your real problem with Tancredo is.

That's what it's all about. Show us that you are serious about border and interior enforcement (some mass deportations) before you try to run some amnesty con job by us. I don't think we'll ever see such a good faith effort quid pro quo enforcement. The slick hacks in DC will try to scam us same as they have for years on illegal immigration

No, hes saying that those opposed to illegal immigration want round ups, concentration camps, and mass deportations of illegals. The thing is with the exception of a few potential racists and a few talking out of anger and not meaning it, most of the people bringing up such things are those in favor of letting illegals stay.

I truest Tom Tancredo to set up a rational guest worker program. I don't trust George Bush (voted for him twice) to be a straight shooter on this issue. He has too much strange compassion for foreigners from Mexico and Central America who busted past our borders. They come before Americans.

We can start by making it illegal to wire money out of the U.S. to Mexico. If they have to carry it back over the border, that gives us a new opportunity to keep them from breaking our laws again. Not to mention enforcing the 'no more than $10,000.' law. Take that Vincente!

ALL OF YOUR DOLLARS BELONG TO US/U.S.!

What was that you told me yesterday about holding my breath? :)

He understands listens to nothing from the public - only to RINOS like Kolbe and McCain who want to reward the criminal invaders. Oh, yeah, and their solution is to try to trick us with a guest-worker program. They haven't enforced any of the existing immigration laws, at least 25% of Mexicans claim they want to move here (in study last week), and now these open border people will reward them with amnesty. Not to mention, Daddy Bush would be really upset if his son ruined the "plan."

Gutless would imply that he agreed with your position and simply lacked the courage to act on it. The truth is that he doesn't agree with your position.
