A quote from the Super Dome:

"I could have stayed at home and watched my roof blow off," said one of the refugees, Harald Johnson, 43. "Instead, I came down here and watched the Superdome roof blow off."

Can emergency vehicles even get around the city right now?

Wise words, my FRiend. While virtually all eyes are focused on NOLA, this very large storm is causing damage across a wide path. For example, reports from Mobile AL have been few, and sketchy.

Obviously you have a point of view beyond that of a seven year old child. This was an excellent teaching opportunity, and I'm sure the parents of this child were responsive to this innocent observation.

Has the back side of the eye hit the N.O. area yet?

The west side of the eyewall grazed the NO area to the very far east. It looks like they'll get a drop-off for a bit and then a big feeder band will wrap in from the WSW.

Another thing I was wondering about - did the traffic jams on I-10 and the other roads clear or where there people still stuck on them when this thing hit?

Haven't heard anything on that. Maybe some of the folks trying to turn this into a hurricane chat/joke thread could do some research instead and find out.

You are the one who is overhyping and exaggerating, in this case as to how it was reported. While indeed there were a few excesses, for the most part the reports stated that this was approaching as 1 of the most powerful, not THE most powerful, since it had reached the 4th lowest pressure reading of an Atlantic Basin hurricane, which is a fact. The NHC said that they couldn't count on it weakening much before landfall, but also routinely stated that estimating intensity is very difficult for them, much less precise than forecast track. And in fact Gulfport has received 22' storm surge, which is pretty darn high.

Enough wasting time on this silly carping.

That's old masonry that fell, and the high rise behind it is still standing and wearing its skin.

A lot of these old brick buildings are deathtraps. Firefighters absolutley hate them - the brick walls have a tendency to collapse on top of them when the building catches on fire, and the structural timbers burn like fireworks since they are often treated with creosote.

also may depend on what part of the country you are from. There are areas were non-whites are a definite minority, and to someone watching from there it might seem perceptually different.

When I leave the south (I am from Mississippi) to, say, western colorado, I am ALWAYS taken aback at interacting with whites in almost all transactions, even service jobs.

Wow, I didn't realize Hugo got to that area.

Oh yeah.

I was living in Charlotte at the time. No power for 4 days -- bathtub full of water for a quick wash and to flush the commode, coffee on the camp stove.
It's God's way of telling you it's time to empty the freezer and grill everything.

St. Bernard update 10:45 a.m.

Some people who stayed in St. Bernard Parish were
forced up into their attics to escape the floodwaters,
said state Sen. Walter Boasso, who heard from local
officials that some houses in Chalmette had water
rising beyond the second floor.

"We know people were up in the attics hollering for
help," said Boasso, who evacuated to Baton Rouge and
was camped out at the state Office of Emergency
Preparedness. Hopefully rescue workers will be able to
get to people who are trapped before the water rises
too high, he said.
