----On ther upside, this will eliminate a good deal of the nutria population...----

That would be poetic.... a mass wipeout by hurricane of hordes of the critters who for years have been chewing away at the coastline that's supposed to be a buffer against hurricanes.

It's a lot better than being told by the state government to eat them.

Yes, we hung that sign - during ISABEL! LOL.

I am sure patriotic Americans are doing similer silly things today - I pray for them.

Now, If I could only catch up with this thread! LOL.

Not entirely true. "Worst possible outcome for the city" would be a slight move west which would surely destroy the levies. East would've been ideal but directly passing over is second best. Three residents from a nursing home died on the bus ride during the evaculation.

After hurricane Hugo, the most directly helpful groups were the fire departments and church groups, with food aid and chainsaws.

Same here last year, after Charley. Though the church groups also brought bottled water and ice. The Fire Dept. set up a comfort station, where people could come and take showers as well.

Here's another recipe to go with the pretzels...

Get a 1 qt. mason jar and fill with black cherries. Add Korbel brandy until the jar is full to the top. Cap it and let it sit in a dark place for two or three months. Spoon out a nice glass of brandy (it's okay to eat the cherries too) and sip after each pretzel. Very nice...

I suppose this is a stupid question, but if 100,000 people have no mode of transportation.... why didn't they load them all on river boats yesterday and send them North up the Mississippi out of the path of the storm????

Is there a point where authorities shut off the freeways out of NO thinking that if you haven't left yet, it's probably too late?

Shutting off freeways involves the issue of physically denying access. Yes, it is done. But the "where" is a complex decision.

Well said, hope the Navy can move relief ships, and or chartered cruise ships into New Orleans to sustain the city...

The national guard guy said earlier on the local station that there were 30,000. So who knows? (I had also heard earlier that there were 10,000 in line waiting outside. No one waiting outside now.)

There are still several hours left before landfall. I hope and pray that this witch Katrina alters her course in a way that there is ultimately less damage. I also hope and pray that she loses strength.

I don't want to see a doomsday scenario in NO. It's been neat to speculate and fret about it over the years, but I don't actually want it to happen. This hurricane scares me.
