Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

Not just New Orleans. I think of Plaquemine parish and some of the other parishes that they say may be completely underwater. There's a LOT of history there as well as a lot of people whose lives and belongings are in danger.

They reported on the ABC News link from above that upper floors of the high rise hotels are not safe. What got me is that they have not even seen the worst of the winds but are already getting people off the high floors.

This is scarey.

There is a hotel connected to the Dome, but I think the Marriot is on Canal...unless ownership has shifted since I left...

So jokes are OK too.

What the heck,

My wife's birthday was yesterday, she wanted something that went from zero to 200 fast! So I bought her a bathroom scale.

ROTFL

Gotta admit, it's hard to stay up wondering how loved ones and others are doing.

Thanks I am going to ask my Pool Guy about this.

I live on the coast and fresh water to top off my lap pool is limited.

I still can't get a feel for where Katrina's gonna come on-shore in relation to NO.

The last I've heard is 15-20 miles east of NO. It seems as though Katrina has picked up a slight wobble now - unless I'm not seeing that right on the TV.

That wobble is making it hard to tell whether Katrina will edge eastward or westward.

Anyone have a guesstimate or gut reaction?

Something caused them to move everyone to the ballroom. Cannot believe anyone stayed in the city.

Eye of the hurricane is getting more defined again.

On second thought--the feed for Hurricane City is dreadful.

I hear ya. We've never seen a situation as serious as this--not even Andrew or Camille--because we're talking about New Orleans getting a direct strike by a Cat 5 hurricane. Very, very scary.
