Supertankers cannot deliver cargo at NYC or LA?

I find that VERY hard to believe.

believe it or not.

that is a sad thing too, but I wouldn't expect it to continue when the rebuilding begins.

You're assuming that NYC and LA together can process all of the oil that could be delivered. It ain't gonna happen.

NYC & LA harbors are too shallow for oil tankers. Also, they do not have the oil terminals that New Orleans has.

Now way in NY - even modest size container ships have to offload some before they come to NY - lots of shoaling.

I thought they did offload in Long Beach, California.

That is because they are tankers and not cargo ships.

From http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/oog/info/state/ny.html:

Refining & Marketing (Downstream)
# Refineries: There are no refineries located in New York.

There are quite a few in PA, DE, and NJ, though.

They certainly delivered cargo to coastal ports before they built the facility...I think what it does is makes it easier and simpler, no tricky manoevering of ships in port, with the higher risk of accident and spillage, so people are going to use it as a reason to run up the spot market.
