Gold Star Mom: Iraq Had WMDs

A Gold Star mom who lost her son in Iraq said Sunday that there was enough evidence that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction to justify going to war against Saddam Hussein.

"I have no concern about there being weapons of mass destruction of some regard there, that were going to be used against Americans," Rhonda Winfield told "Fox News Sunday."

Mrs. Winfield was responding to fellow Gold Star mother Barbara Porchia, who insisted during the same segment that there were no WMDs in Iraq.

"I have seen photos of entire fighter jets buried in the sand", Mrs. Winfield countered. "I have seen pictures of entire caches of weapons that just my son's unit would uncover."

Mrs. Winfield, who lost her son, Lance Corporal Jason Redifer, in January 2005, was referring to the July 2003 discovery by U.S. Marines of more than 30 still-functional fighter aircraft buried beneath the sands of Baghdad.

Her comments show that at least some families of troops serving in Iraq do not accept the widespread misconception that Saddam had no weapons of mass destruction before the U.S. attacked in March 2003.

Among the WMD evidence discounted by the press [and almost never noted by the Bush administration]:

* 500 tons of yellow cake uranium stored at Saddam's al Tuwaitha nuclear weapons development facility, which was secured by U.S. troops after the invasion.

* 1.8 tons of partially enriched uranium discovered at al Tuwaitha, which was removed by the U.S. Energy Department in June 2004 amidst warnings it could be used to produce a dirty bomb.

* Centrifuge parts and blueprints hidden by one of Saddam's top nuclear scientists, who told U.S. interrogators that he was ordered to keep the bombmaking tools ready to resume production at a moment's notice.

* Satellite photos from 2002 that showed new construction at al Tuwaitha, which had been largely destroyed in U.S. bombing raids during the first Gulf War and Operation Desert Fox.

* The discovery of nearly two dozen artillery shells loaded with Sarin and mustard gas, which was reported in June 2004 by Iraq Survey Group chief Charles Duelfer.

"I know why my son went there," Mrs. Winfield told Fox. "They watched those towers fall and they knew that the liberties that we have were something that they believed were worth fighting for."

Unfortunately, the anti-American left doesn't value liberty or think America is worth fighting for.

I think this is key. If I were Bush, I'd be enumerating this constantly, at least enough to overcome the leftist media's propaganda.

This alone IMO would tend to reverse his plummeting job approval rate. What is this administration thinking?

This is yet another case of the MSM making up the news. There are clear and obvious examples of WMDs found in Iraq and they keep saying "NO WMD's found"

It's about time some one on the news shows mentioned these planes

What we found wasn't what we were expecting to find. Precursor chemicals, inactive centrifuges, and 20-odd shells that couldn't be fired out of a catapult without disintegrating isn't what Powell presented to the UN, which is why the Bush Administration wisely doesn't mention WMD's much.

...and the many weapons caches, some of which were the size of a football field. Each was probably reported on once on the 2:30 a.m. radio news and then dropped.

An artillery round with mustard gas was used as an IED and detonated in May of 2004 against U.S. troops. I guess Scott Ritter missed that one.

His job approval rating is NOT 'plummeting'..........though that's what the pollsters and media would like you to think.

Check out the percentage of Repub/Dem/Independent voters in those polls.

The goal is to lower the President's approval by saying that his numbers are 'plummeting.'

Six in ten voters support staying the course in Iraq. 90 percent, or nearly so, of Republicans still support him. Skew the percentages farther and farther toward the left, and you get the nosedive.

The MSM is full of hatred for this country. I also had no doubt that we would find those weapons. Thanks to all the stalling, Saddam had the time to move a lot of them, perhaps to Syria. Jmo, of course.

On the subject of WMDs....1)how many prominent democRATS
(including The Most Ethical President In History) spoke
openly and forcefully from about '98 up until the very eve of
the war about how dangerous and heavily armed their new best friend
was before he was taken out and...2)what might we
find if we were to do a thorough search of Syria (given the
reports of feverish activity along the border in the weeks
leading up to the war)?

There has to be a political aspect of this we do not know about. Perhaps he has to keep quiet about it lest he make the Russians or some other "ally" look very bad.

WMD is a subject that Democrats, Republican, and most other countries agreed upon...Saddam had WMD and used them in the past! Saddam was a supporter, and Implementor of Terror. I think everyone forgot about Solman Pac.
Now we have several questions...Is everyone a liar about WMD's or could Saddam have buried or moved the WMD's?

IF Saddam trained and supported Terrorist, isn't take a good enough reason to remove him?

Another thought is...Congress approved voted in favor of using military actions to remove Saddam!

We removed Saddam with a great military strategy. Now we fight Terrorist there...instead of here.

The media is being intellectually dishonest

They reported all these stories and then months later tell the public there was nothing found in Iraq
