Fox News showing long lines of people waiting to get into the Superdome. Many tourists riding out the storm in hotels.

If New Orleans is devasted, the President and administration will come under the most intense fire of all time for any transfer of $$$$millions to Iraq-rebuilding instead of "rebuilding one of our own cities".

Y'all get my drift. I don't even want to think of it.

Karl Rove was seen Saturday, boarding a helicopter bound for NO, with a packet of ACME Instant Hurricane seeds in his pocket.

I knew it! ;-)

That trough dipping down from the west saved our gas prices, if that trough had come down a little later the storm would have plowed right through the center of the oil rigs and gas prices would have skyrocketed. On its current track it looks like Katrina will avoid most of the oil rigs offshore.

Fox cut the President's comments on Iraq, too.
Apparently, Americans can't handle two news stories.

I presume since FOX had just moments earlier played the radio audio of Mr. Bush's comments about Iraq, that they deemed it not the number 1 story of the moment. I agree.

The President does NOT order evacuaiton. He merely has the power to approve a request from the governor. If the request is late, it's the governor's fault.

Correction on that links description: It's a scenario of possible flooding if Katrina hits NO or closeby.

Our (Fla) causeways are closed down when the wind reaches 40 mph and those are the high bridge ones. I'd expect theirs might close sooner due to wind-blown waves. With the bands apoproaching, they might not have until dusk.

The mayor said they were moving hospital patients to the third floor or above. The doctors, fire, police for after the storm. They said they were marshaling boats to rescue stranded people. The tall buildings should survive, the roads will need boats to travel, but should be doable. I think NOLA city has some 30 odd 30 foot boats staged for just this eventuality. Recalling from memory what the Mayor of NO said earlier.

Wow. I just looked at the Bridge Cam; it looks like night there. There are web cams for Bourbon Street, too; I'm gonna go check those out...full report when I get back...

The only thing I can think of--is to allow the LEO overseeing traffic control to get out of there too.

That's correct. Millions in damage but seldom a spill.

Radar track of Katrina still appears to be more NW than N...right for the French Quarter. Calling this a one-in-500 year event on CNN.
