Vanity: Open letter to FEMA and Bush..declare a NATIONAL emergency
lots | August 28, 2005 | me

I have never seen any thing like this in my 20 years of storm following....nor do i recall such a potential in history..

we have the worst case scenario times 10.even the "big one" everyone talked about was even assuming a much smaller cane area wise..

the storm is huge...like 2-3 times the size of andrew and maybe almost just as strong...it is hitting at the worst possibe angle for NOLA and size the eye is so large ,30 miles across, the MS coast will get it too...it will affect many more people that Andrew did..hurricane force winds are 150 miles wide and exspanding... Andrew was very small and jogged south and hit then less populated areas of miami then into the bare swamps...storm surge with will be huge may go miles inland in places

its large so it will take awhile to spin down producing many tornnadoes and flooding inland

Declare a national emergency...get the military ready for rescue then clean up

I never thought i would see a bigger news story in my life then 9-11....this could be it...its picking up speed and many people will still be stuck on the roads when it nears..plus it is so big wind/rain many hours ahead of it will not help with the traffic...

"Wonder if the USA will get all the help the TSUAMI countries did "

Traditionally, eastern Canadians, New Brunswick, Nova scotia always helped out places like NO, Louisiana When disaster struck. I'm sure if help is needed they will do what they can, like send down power, electric crews, etc. As for the rest of the world? I doubt it. They don't have much to offer anyways, and they hate us.

That's the best thing to do, rather than stay put and speculate. Save your own hides first, because life cannot be replaced. Everything else can. Now's the time to leave that cat you've always hated outside...

It would be quick and easy to activate the small staff of FEMA. Getting the whole show on the road would take significant time, since temporary staff has to be hired to write and process the pile of purchase orders, and various local official agencies have to be attached, who in turn have to reschedule their own staff and equipment.

Maybe those in hurricane prone areas should live in the mid-west? Oh wait Tornados. Ok, um go west. Oh wait earthquakes! Ok North that's it! Massive snow storms!

Let's not forget fires, floodings, urban riots. The man talks non-sense, ignore him!

Where do you live that is resistant to all forces of nature? Earthquakes, flooding, tornados, fires, snow storms, lightning, hurricanes, etc happen all over this country every year. Please tell us so we can all move to your neighborhood and live a carefree life.

He just goes to his happy place where nothing can touch him :)

A worse case scenario is setting up. God be with the people and pets/animals that are there. I certainly the elderly and shut-ins are checked on be friends, family, enemies, or anyone else. This is the most dangerous storm to hit our borders.

I can recall when conservatism meant smaller, less-intrusive and more efficient government. It has come to mean as big a government as the liberals want, only with the money spent differently.

A less intrusive government doesn't mean a government which doesn't get involved when the people are in need. I've read all of your comments and they clearly come out of complete ignorance.

Yup... I was looking at some pictures of the temperature maps of the gulf, and right before this Hurricane hits the coast is the warmest water temps.
This Hurricane is going to be a monster.

Well, I'll admit to a good bit of ignorance. But complete ignorance? Nah.

Being aware of hurricanes for close to 40 years, I’ve known (but not experienced) some close to what Katrina is. Back when the damage was far greater, the death toll higher. Now we have better building and more warning. We survived those, we will survive this – even though many will lose everything and many will die.

Fox reporting that the normal 5hr drive to from NOLA to Houston is taking over 17hrs....we need the govt to help get those people to safety.

Any ideas on how “The Government” can suddenly widen the highways?

Yup.. we help other nations when they have a natural disaster, but, are they going to help us in our natural disaster ? I think not, they are going to turn a blind eye on our natural disaster.

Those people in the traffic were on their way out, I feel for them because it must be scary and very uncomfortable.

But my heart is with the poor, the elderly and the infirm who need assistance to even get the basics of life on their own. I want the government to help them survive this, because they don't have the health, money or resources to help themselves.

They do have my sympathy, as I may one day be in their position – but there’s not much that can be done until after it is all over.

They have my sympathy too & my prayers. I had occasion to visit NO & LA over the years many times for business and vacations, even a cruise.

Took several tours and remember seeing the levies & being told of all the "plans" that were in place for the natural disaster of a flood or hurricane.

It seems now that the plans did not take into account their elderly, sick, infirm or poor.
