I'm Jewish, and most Jews that I know don't interpret the Bible literally.

Maybe you need a wider circle of friends...

Did Moses REALLY strike a rock to get water out?

Did God REALLY rain down fire and brimstone on Sodom?

Did His finger REALLY write on stone tablets and a wall?

Nice of you to be so concerned about my social life.

I don't know, but I would doubt these things happened in the literal sense. I interpret the Bible as a series of analogies meant to convey lessons about life. The Bible was somehow directed by God, but most likely written down by wise humans. The story about fire and brimstone teaches us about sin, punishment and second chances, and Moses' striking of the rock is a metaphor about trusting God. Many Jews and Christians do believe these stories occurred literally as they are written down, and I respect their beliefs. Please respect mine.
