New Orleans can't survive a Cat 4 storm, much less a Cat 5. The folks who spent a lot of time and money boarding up the windows on the first and second floors of buildings were engaged in a pointless effort.

Sometimes when I hear that people are thinking they can outfit their homes for a Category 4 or 5 storm, I despair. Do they not watch the Weather Channel and see pictures of the destruction these storms do?

That's a dumb thing to say! Dennis was a CAT V 24 hours before landfall - ended up being CAT III at 115 - damage was minimal.
It's shaping up to do the same with Katrina. Eyewall replacement cycle and then getting shear off the coast could really reduce this thing. Not saying this will happen but it very well could. Those that boarded up will have saved themselves significant damage by doing so.
Another factor - if the strike point is east - the highest winds will be well NE of NO.
