Armstrong Gets Backing From USA Cycling
The Washington Times ^ | Aug 26, 7:09 PM EDT | By JIM VERTUNO

Posted on 08/26/2005 4:25:32 PM PDT by T Ruth

Lance Armstrong received strong backing Friday from cycling's domestic governing body, which said accusations against the seven-time Tour de France champion are "completely without credibility."

"Preposterous is a strong word, but it is warranted in this case," said Gerard Bisceglia, chief executive officer of USA Cycling.

"Lance Armstrong is one of the most tested athletes in the history of sport and he has come up clean every single time," Bisceglia said. "This kind of years-ago testing of a single sample with new technology is completely without credibility."

* * *

"What's worse is that Lance cannot defend himself because there is no mechanism for final resolution," he added.

* * *

Armstrong questions the handling of samples frozen six years ago. He also wonders how he is to defend himself when the only confirming evidence - the 'A' sample used for the 1999 tests - no longer exists.

He also charged officials at the suburban Paris lab with violating WADA code for failing to safeguard the anonymity of any remaining 'B' samples.

Pound said the French report appears stronger than previous accusations against Armstrong. C "If he had one, you could say it was an aberration," Pound said. "When you get up to six, there's got to be some explanation."

Got any proof, other than the jealous rantings of a discredited French newspaper?

Yep, he cannot defend himself, and that's precisely why the spineless Frogs are after him. The irrelevant pansies don't know any other way.

Which is the same reason L'Equipe is able to make such outrageous accusations. I am still waiting for a reporter to find out how a private testing lab came into possession of the samples, and who authorized the tests.

Seems like if you were trying to perfect a test for a particular substance, you would refine the tests by using samples that you knew either had the substance, or didn't. Not a sample where you didn't know anything about the contents! How could you know whether it was working?

I want to believe that Lance really has done all of his cycling free of any illegal drugs. I really do. Gosh, I pray that it's true.

But....

If any sport was ever custom-made for banned sustances, it's cycling. You name it... steroids, blood enhancers, amphedimines, pain pills, etc... they all are very useful in cycling. Competitive cycling has been among the dirtiest of sports for a very long time.

I'm not willing to say that Lance, or any other Tour athlete, is using banned substances, but I'm never ever suprised when one is busted.

How do you know this? Do you ride or compete in some other sport? Not meaning to sound cranky, but why do you say this?

The lab that is accredited to test has stated this. They are the ones who are contracted to provide proof. You'll never get more proof than this.

I'll tell you, testing results are political and involve legal issues.

Just because an athelete was not called on it doesn't mean their test (A sample in this case many years ago) didn't indicate use.

Testers get sick of this, seeing positives that the adminsitrative people hold back. That's probably why someone finally leaked this.

No. It is the lab that does the tests.

if the French went as hard after the Germans as they have after Lance, it would have been the French in Berlin and not the Germans in Paris....

Interesting. It has never shown up in any LEGITIMATE test and he has been tested hundreds of times.

The French had better back off, or he's likely to come out of retirement and kick their butts again, and again, and again...

That's the interesting thing...

Not being announced is not the same as not showing up.

"How do you know this? Do you ride or compete in some other sport? Not meaning to sound cranky, but why do you say this?"

I'm a guy who rides 1000 - 1500 or so miles a year on a road bike. As such, I often ride with those who used to compete, and of course, we're all interested in the sport on a competitive level. Heck, many of us work out by putting our bikes on a stand in front of the TV, peddling while watching Tour de France coverage.

It is possible that Tour athletes are running clean. However, when most of the known enhancers are very helpful to bicyclists, and when you see the super-human numbers being put up (115 miles at 32 mph at altitutde??), you gotta assume that the vast majority of the riders have used, or are using, something besides oatmeal and mom's supper.

Now if they tested Sheryl Crow,.......

The French are just envious, mean, nasty, spiteful and hateful. Sore losers. An American kicked their butts over and over again.

When the French work as hard as Lance, then they can bitch.

Get your facts straight. He and his wife were divorced long before Cheryl Crow came on the seen. You are repeating an old story that has long been discredited.

Not being announced is not the same as not showing up.

Are you suggesting that he came up hot in a test in 1999 and they have kept it quiet all this time? If that is what you are claiming, then you had best read the article. They pulled a sample from 1999 out of storage and just now tested it. From what I have read about this in previous stories, they can't even show a chain of custody for the sample that they tested.
