They were not private property, they were stolen property.That has yet to be adjudicated. If this goes before a jury, the government may well have a difficult time proving its case. There was apparently a window of four days between separate EOs of Roosevelt's. I supect strongly that the case isn't as airtight as FedGov is trying to make it.
I hope these folks get the coins back.

What was stolen was a lot of the people's wealth when the gold standard was ended and people's gold deposits were confiscated in return for fiat money whose value has been stolen by the government every day since. An immoral law is no law at all. (Aquinas) Then we are only talking about power and deception and counter-deception.
