Book to address issues such as leadership, women in business, and the importance of technology
Carly Fiorina has reached a deal to pen a memoir about her dramatic career, which went on hiatus in February following her ouster from Hewlett-Packard (HP) (Profile, Products, Articles) after a turbulent five-year run as the company's chief executive.
Due out in late 2006 from Penguin Group USA's Portfolio imprint, Fiorina's book will blend writing about her career with her views on topics such as leadership, how women can thrive in business, and how technology will reshape the world, her publisher said.
In her trailblazing career, Fiorina rose from secretary to six-time topper of Fortune Magazine's "50 Most Powerful Women in Business" list. After gaining prominence by leading Lucent Technologies' initial public offering spin-off from AT&T, Fiorina was named HP's chief executive officer in 1999. Her vision for revitalizing the company led to its controversial 2002 acquisition of Compaq -- which eventually prompted her forced departure from HP when, nearly three years later, the company still struggled to meet shareholders' performance expectations.
Portfolio already has one Fiorina book in its catalog: "Perfect Enough: Carly Fiorina and the Reinvention of Hewlett-Packard," by George Anders. A Publishers Weekly review of the 2003 book said it offered "workmanlike reportage on the events, but falls short of linking it to a big picture worth caring about and never rises to offer a standout story."
Portfolio didn't disclose the terms of its contract with Fiorina, but it's a good bet she isn't writing the book for the money. Fiorina picked up $21 million cash as a severance payment when she left HP.
Here's $21 Million. Now please, please leave. Go write a book or something.
Rule #1: Don't be Carly Fiorina.
whats she gonna write about? How NOT to run a company? lol
The title should be "What Glass Ceiling? If I can fail all the way to the top, anybody can"
She did a number on Lucent, too.
I wonder if she will include how she destroyed Hp in her book.
After a quick search I managed to find it again, and here it is:

Carly Fiorina: Affirmative action in action.
Rule #367: Don't let a person in marketing try to run a tech company.
LOL! All here are of the same mindset. :-)
Imperfect Enough: Carly Fiorina and the mass Destruction of Hewlett-Packard

Figure from Yahoo Finance
Right after the 2 PM announcement, the stock price jumped up 10% and settled down to close up 6.9% by the end of the day. Now, HP's market capitalization is $65 billion. In other words, the market thinks that Carly Fiorina was destroying about $5 billion in shareholder value just by being CEO. It's not often you get that clear an idea of how the world feels about you. Not a bad result for the HP board either. Fiorina's severance package is $21 million. There aren't many decisions you can make that increase your valuation by a factor of 200 over what you paid. That's a pretty good ROI.
Credit: Kevin Dick pointed out the cost/benefit ratio on the severance package.
I sincerely doubt she thinks she destroyed anything.
She thinks that she rooted out a pervasive white-male dominated culture and replaced it with one that embraces and celebrates diversity in all its forms.
Of course, the company's a hell of a lot smaller but... Well, it was too big anyway. And had too much market share, and too much money.
And so much of their product line was taken up with that icky, phallic, techie stuff. All those connectors and and prongs and plug-in modules. Uggh. No more.
