I have refrained from commenting on this whole Pat Robertson affair, in part to learn more, and in part because I do not want to carelessly be critical. However, I have now seen the video clip of Roberston's comments. His comments were unequivocal.

I have been struck by the fact that Pat Robertson may not have a significant depth of faith in the living God. Surely it is God who lifts up rulers, and surely it is God who removes them. God does not need a man to remove another from office. God is sovereign and will do as He chooses. Therefore, if Robertson believes in the sovereign power of God he would not be calling for assassinations or for kidnappings, rather, he would be praying to the Almighty to change Chavez' heart.

How long do think it will be before some Nut-hatch in BowelMoveOn.org sees Pat Robertson's comments and thinks "Maybe there's another world leader who God would like to see Taken Out to the ballgame?"

David had faith in God, yet he made war on the enemies of Israel, as did Joshua. Scripture does not equate the actions taken by nations in their defense with private citizens rebelling against their rulers.

Pat Robertson, a private American citizen, was not talking about private action against Chavez, but covert measures by the United States government against Venezuela, which has a hostile government. Mainstream Christian theology has discussed at length the theory of just war, and circumstances exist where nations are justified in using violence in their own defense.

Surely, it is unreasonable to say that President Kennedy was unjustified in authorizing the assassination of Fidel Castro. Both our nation and Cuba would have been better off had those attempts succeeded.
