WASHINGTON — A Pentagon secret intelligence team identified 9/11 leader Mohamed Atta through a probe of blind Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman — the mastermind of the first attempt to destroy the World Trade Center, it was revealed yesterday.

An outside contractor to the intelligence unit, code named Able Danger, has told congressional staffers Atta's name was discovered by a computer data-mining search of connections to Abdel-Rahman, the Muslim cleric in prison for inspiring the 1993 trade center bombing and a plot to blow up New York landmarks.

Contractor James D. Smith testified that a California researcher was later able to purchase Atta's photograph from an Islamic Web site, officials confirmed.

"They" (Able Danger) linked Atta to the blind sheik and the 1993 WTC bombing, and they made the link before 9-ll. We have three brave Americans who have come forward with information proving this is true. Also true, the 9-11 Commission was briefed about it and did not include that information in their Report.

"Army reserve officer, Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer, and Navy Captain Scott J. Phillpott. Both men confirm that the intelligence operation identified Atta in early 2000. A third man, a contractor who worked on the project, has also said that he actually possessed a copy of the chart described by Rep. Weldon and others until last year."

I hope these 3 men don't suffer too many indignities....or worse....for stepping up.

Until this morning, while preparing my previous reply on this thread, I did not know Jamie Gorelick was Pentagon General Counsel. I did not know she was the Pentagon official who wrote the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.

"Sept. 11 Commission member Jamie Gorelick, who critics say hobbled the war on terrorism when she served as deputy attorney general under President Clinton, was a leading proponent for one of the Clinton administration's most controversial proposals when she served as general counsel for the Pentagon in 1993 and 1994."

Maybe others just assumed Gorelick's only position in the Clinton Administration was DOJ Deputy to Janet Reno. The following is from Captain's Quarter: "As general counsel to the DoD, Gorelick was the top lawyer in the department (the position requires Senate confirmation). Recall that Janet Reno, Gorelick's soon-to-be boss, was attorney general during this entire time, and that Gorelick herself was the protege of none other than Hillary Clinton."

I'm going on old recollections here so I may not have this exactly right but, as I recall it, the cyanide was just one aspect of the 1993 attack.

IIRC, the intent of blowing the bomb in the underground parking area was to cause a structural failure that would topple that tower into the other one. Doing that would have taken out both towers almost instantly, allowing almost no possibility of evacuation. Had that attack succeeded, the casualty count would have dwarfed 9/11.

ACCORDING TO THE presiding judge in last year's trial, the bombing of New York's World Trade Center on February 26, 1993 was meant to topple the city's tallest tower onto its twin, amid a cloud of cyanide gas. Had the attack gone as planned, tens of thousands of Americans would have died. Instead, as we know, one tower did not fall on the other, and, rather than vaporizing, the cyanide gas burnt up in the heat of the explosion. "Only" six people died.
