The new livery of the newly merged (well, actually America West took over USairways and kept the name) was unveiled today. It encorporates the liveries of both airlines, and even though you can't see it in this picture, also pays tribute to the 4 airlines that make up the new airline, America West, Piedmont, PSA and Allegheny.
Photo can be viewed here:

Also, there will be 4 "Retro" liveries representing AWA, PSA, Piedmont and Allegheny.

Great to see the PSA Happy Plane back. I loved that design.

Will the PSA one have the smile?
Flew on a lot of Pied(off)mont NAMCO YS-11 aircraft in/out of Augusta, GA.
Flew on a LOT of Allegheny (Agony) Dehavilland Twin Otters, Beech 99's in/out of Lancaster, Reading, Philly, ABE, Harrisburg, PA.
Only flew PSA a couple of times. Stewardesses (or is it no stew-persons?) were great.
Never flew America West. Were they a spin-off of Western?

No! America West started on its own in 1983 and is the ONLY post deregulation carrier created back then that is still alive.
BTW, YS-11's are still flying in Thailand for the awful Phuket Airlines, I almost had to fly one earlier this year!

Son of Allegheny Airlines.

Our local paper here in Charlotte, NC says the designs were generated "in-house" [read no cost] unlike previous expensive investments in outside consultants who frequently came up with poorly received designs. I'm talking about the US Airways side, of course. America West is full of enthusiastic and creative folks who look like they may be able to save US Air after all. And the retro photo with the Piedmont livery makes my little ole Piedmont pickin' heart flutter.

Great to see the PSA Happy Plane back. I loved that design. I hope to see that livery on US Airways planes flying the routes between LAS/PHX and cities in California!

Remember the Allegheny Airlines' Shorts Brothers high-wing airplanes ? We flew in one out of Indianapolis. After everyone was on board, the ground crew came up with a roll of duct tape and taped the door shut. The pilot announced the door had developed a loud air leak whistle and the duct taped every flight.

I love that USAirways design. Very patriotic. :)
I only flew Piedmont a couple of times in the 1980s but I thought they gave very good service.

Remember the Allegheny Airlines' Shorts Brothers high-wing airplanes ?Yep. I was on one that broke a fan belt on the AC and the cabin filled with smoke. I smelled like burnt rubber for a week.
Note to other FReepers:
DON'T even think about getting the two of us started on Northwest.

I don't like the main design at all. It's like USA3000, or even a charter airline. The retro liveries are great though. Do you know if those planes have been painted yet, or if they're still in the mock up stage? I'd get a kick out of seeing the smiling PSA plane.

Remember the Allegheny Airlines' Shorts Brothers high-wing airplanes ? The flying school buses? Absolutely. I flew on those several times out of Washington National...

...or is it now stew-persons?
I think they prefer Flight Attendant these days, but they're all really just wait staff with some FAA training (no offense intended to any FReeping Flight Attendants out there).

After the tape was on and we were in the air, the co-pilot pulled back the little curtain and pushed out an ice chest of cold Cokes. "Take one and pass em back," he said.
