Televangelist calls for Chavez' death

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson called on Monday for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, calling him a "terrific danger" to the United States.

Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, said on "The 700 Club" it was the United States' duty to stop Chavez from making Venezuela a "launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism."

Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.

"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it," Robertson said. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."

Electronic pages and a message to a Robertson spokeswoman were not immediately returned Monday evening.

Venezuela is the fifth largest oil exporter and a major supplier of oil to the United States. The CIA estimates that U.S. markets absorb almost 59 percent of Venezuela's total exports.

Venezuela's government has demanded in the past that the United States crack down on Cuban and Venezuelan "terrorists" in Florida who they say are conspiring against Chavez.

Robertson accused the United States of failing to act when Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002.

"We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability," Robertson said.

"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator," he continued. "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."

Let it go.

There are some people on FR who you will never convince are wrong on certain issues. Truth be told, they aren't interested in civil, intelligent debate. You've been sucked into an exchange with one of the biggest troublemakers around here.

How would I be making a fool out of myself?

Looking back on this thread, I'd say you have a lot of problems with a lot of people.

so I came back to this one

To continue an argument that was OVER at least 12 hours ago.

Why when the debate gets difficult, do you call for a Moderator?

No, but when a moderator tells you to stop and you just go and find another thread, yeah, I do ping the moderator.

But carry on; this thread is Exhibit A of your continual whinning and personal attacks.

"To continue an argument that was OVER at least 12 hours ago."

But you said:

"As long as you post openly on this forum, people are free to respond"

There is no time "limit".

"No, but when a moderator tells you to stop and you just go and find another thread, yeah, I do ping the moderator."

Nope, this is not just "another" thread...*this* is the original thread. THe mod said I couldnt "carry" the ORIGINAL argument from that one to this and to stop in THAT thread.

"But carry on; this thread is Exhibit A of your continual whinning and personal attacks."

Personal attacks? How is asking you to remain consistent in your criticisms of not calling for someone's death a "personal attack"? Youre the one calling me a fool. BTW, you didn't listen when I asked you:

don't bother pinging me anymore, you're not worth the time.

People are known by the people who consider them enemies.

I'm comfortable with my associations -- and happy about those who disagree with me.

>>>>Rangel called Robertson "a man who seems to have quite a bit of influence in that country," adding sarcastically that his words were "very Christian."

The comments "reveal that religious fundamentalism is one of the great problems facing humanity in these times," Rangel said. <<<<<<<<<<

Not the first time Pat Robertson's words have been used to besmirch the name of Christianity.

Christian bashers do not need an reason to besmirch the faith. I understand many on these threads expressing regret that Robertson made his point with these words...it does give the bashers a bullet for their gun...

However, if he quotes actual scripture that states that homosexuals do not enter the kingdom of heaven, he will be besmirched just as much...and if he is in Canada, hate-speech charges may follow.

It's more than just his choice of words. A Reverend represents God, not The Godfather.

I thought Ayatollah Khomeini was despicable human scum for praying that the deposed Shah would contract cancer. I can't think much better of Pat Robertson for this.

I disagree. I looked at this thread and it was clear, it was alleged and he was accused of things he really didn't do from nearly the beginning of this thread. In my opinion, it looked to me as though others were the ones looking for a fight.

In any event, I could care less if someone takes out this two bit commie dictator.

I will keep out of the fray. However having said that (stop the cliches dern you). I fear and sadly too that what we are witnessing on these threads is this.

The insidious hand of political correctness.

Can we of the right ever shake it off? No, I am not accusing persons here of consciously being politically correct. It is the handywork of the left for many many years. I offer proof.

Various persons call for the assassination of important figures in Western society. All we have is a few mumblings against them. Even persons saying we "must try to understand them". Outrage after outrage. This taken as a matter of course- a few eyebrows raised etc.

Now Robertson makes his statement. For the lighter side, I can tell you the inner thoughs of a liberal to whit: "Ooh quick, help me. Robertson said it. Help! do something, the end of the world could come" and so on. Grief misery pain and woe.

You see, the right is being held to ten times the standards of the malevolent haters. The indignation is a put on. Damn and damn again the force of political correctness.

Ah well Rush Limbaugh in his statesman like manner teed off today. Hey, says Rush, do not tell me what I have to put on MY program. This in reply to the horror stricken "advisers" who tried to instruct the El Rushbo, to emote against Robertson.

I wouldn't need grief counseling if Chavez took a dirt nap either. I just don't think a religious leader should be advocating that type of behavior from the pulpit. A civilized religion is part of what separates us from The Islamofascists.

As we should. Do we really want our own leaders to behave like Michael Moore or Cindy Sheehan. People like them and Howard Dean are scum. We want to aspire to higher standard. That's why we should Buchanonize Pat Robertson.
