VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson called on Monday for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, calling him a "terrific danger" to the United States.
Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, said on "The 700 Club" it was the United States' duty to stop Chavez from making Venezuela a "launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism."
Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.
"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it," Robertson said. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."
Electronic pages and a message to a Robertson spokeswoman were not immediately returned Monday evening.
Venezuela is the fifth largest oil exporter and a major supplier of oil to the United States. The CIA estimates that U.S. markets absorb almost 59 percent of Venezuela's total exports.
Venezuela's government has demanded in the past that the United States crack down on Cuban and Venezuelan "terrorists" in Florida who they say are conspiring against Chavez.
Robertson accused the United States of failing to act when Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002.
"We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability," Robertson said.
"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator," he continued. "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."
Actually post #169. You took it upon yourself to make things personal by attacking me, and straying off thread topic. Nice to see you came half way and admitted you went off topic.
I really don't know what the big deal is. If we wanted to, we could take him, and it would never be tied to us.
But the fact is, this guy could die legitimately falling down the stairs, and they would still try to blame us, regardless of what anyone says, or suggests, since he is already considered our enemy by many.
Im not really sure why some posters decided to attack me, and not others for making the same claims. You can read through this and other threads and see that I wasnt the only one.
I guess the thought of a murderous commie dictator being assasinated is disturbing. Gee I wonder if those posters feel/felt the same way about Osama or Saddam, Hitler or Stalin?
So honest political pragmatism is now considered "dumb"?
Or is it because you regard the Robertson as part of your so-called "militant clergy" of Christians who won't STFU?
Surely you must believe I had *no* idea about any of that when I made my initial 'jabs' at you....
Just my opinion, but I think if more of the top bad dogs are taken out, it may put others back in line. Send the message to the little dictators and fanatics. Maybe if a few came up dead all in the same week, a few of the others may start paying attention. Being politically correct has really hurt us bad in recent years, and is not working.
correct, america must become more proactive in order to save itself....
at this point, chavez is a threat....but china and russia is a whole different ballgame. hell, china, russia, and iran.....
How do you know He doesn't?
If you are Christian, then you are Jewish! You have been grafted in or "adopted" into the family of God. God said "Thou shalt not Shed innocent blood" or Thou shalt not murder". There is a difference in murder and killing. The unfortunate translation of the commandment has ruined many Christians interpretations about what God would have them do. This is the age old debate over abortion and capital punishment. Unborn babies cannot be more innocent than they are, but convicted murderers are the quintessential "non innocent". It is not inconsistent for me to want capital punishment for murderer's( Chavez) and not to kill babies. God killed millions in Sodom and Gomorrah and in the flood he probably killed billions of men, women, and children,(and fuzzy little animals for the Peta people here).
One of the hardest things for pseudo Christians to fathom is God killed millions and sanctioned the killing of millions by the Jews in the Bible. This has always been us against them and will be till the final battle. One should decide early on if you are an "us" or a "them". Self defense is a God given right just as you wouldn't hesitate to kill an intruder into your home, God doesn't condemn the killing of murderous despots. When Saddam get the hangman's noose, are we supposed to give him mercy because we are Christians? We put him there.
I think the problem here is most people here have been conditioned to have a knee jerk reaction to the name "Pat Robertson". You want him to be a kook, so the venom starts at the sound of his name. I seem to remember awhile back he was quoted as saying "God told him Bush would be re elected". I remember the hoots and hollering then. Well, he was re elected and there was no apology to Pat. I don't care for everything Pat says either, but he is at least as Christian as the pope. He doesn't pray to statues and dead men and women. Being Christian will always put you at odds with the worlds thinking. Jesus said when He leaves to sell your cloak and buy a sword. He knew His people would be persecuted and they were not to be slaughtered like cattle. Jesus came to be slaughtered, but that isn't our commision.
If Chavez threatens our country, then Bush would be remiss if he didn't take him out. I'm sick of people wanting a mushroom cloud over America before we have the moral authority to act. If a criminal said he was going to kill and rape your family, would you wait till its done or prepare for the worst? You tell the authorities what he said and blow his head off if he come on your property. If that's not legal in your state, move to Texas. Better yet, stay where you are.
Of course I knew you had no idea. That's why I supplied the link. My life has probably been slightly harder to endure than most, and I'm not here to garner any sympathy for the effort I've put forth on my own. I had to re-learn both hearing and speaking for 3 years, ON TOP OF all my other regular schooling. Am I ashamed of that? HELL NO! Why should I be?
Onyx also helped me in a very extraordinary way when I needed it most.
Twice!
She IS a very good person, isn't she? ;O)
I even helped her get through the first few hours, via phone, after her husband ended up in the hospital after taking a very serious fall in their house last March. :)
Who cares what a person who lied about his Korean War experience has to say now?
Pat Robertson and Al Gore are interchangeable.
"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator," he continued. "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."
I can't see how the left can have a problem with that, after all, they believe its easier to have an abortion than take the responsiblity to raise the child
Interesting.
Your point is well taken.
Pat Robertson just gave Hugo Chavez a big fat present.
Chavez has been crying that the U.S. plans to invade and wants him dead. He's been doing a perfect Castro impression to stir up nationalism and Chavez worship in his followers, Chavistas.
Steve Forbes call Robertson a "toothy flake" and it's remarks like this that fuel such thoughts.
You've been fed raw meat and took it up like a hungry dog. How often does the AP say **anything** about Pat Robertson?
Wow, that's pretty heavy Pat! I wonder if he has a list of others who deserve to be assassinated?
" Why don't you stick to diverting hurricanes, you idiot."
Good one!LOL x 2
